Job Description

About the TNRD

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District is located in south-central British Columbia, with dozens rural and urban communities spread across 44,300 square kilometres. The TNRD provides more than 120 local government services to approximately 144,000 people in 10 Electoral Areas, 11 member municipalities, and 25 First Nations.

The TNRD is headquartered in the City of Kamloops, the largest community within the regional district. The Thompson-Nicola region has a vast range of climates, with true four-season weather, plenty of year-round sunshine, little rain, and warm summers. Residents generally have short commutes, easy access to recreation and the outdoors, and a high quality of life. The TNRD acknowledges that we are located within the unceded, ancestral lands of the Nlaka'pumux, Secwépemc, St'at'imc, and Syilx Nations.

The Role:

The Invasive Plant Summer Student will be responsible for supporting the coordination and delivery of the Thompson-Nicola Invasive Plant Management Committees (TNIPMC) (administered by the TNRD) education and outreach program, as well as supporting the TNRD's operational invasive plant program. The invasive plant summer student will work primarily in the field with limited office time.

Operational activities will include supporting the TNRD's biological control program by assisting with biological control agent collections and delivery to private landowners, carrying out invasive plant inventories throughout the region and across multiple jurisdictions, carrying out manual removal of invasive plants, completing data collection records, and supporting with data management.

Primary Duties of the Role include:

  • Deliver presentations to students, youth, organizations, and the general public.
  • Host an information booth at key regional events to discuss invasive plants with the public.
  • Support the coordination and execution of community weed pull events.
  • Coordinate social media activities, including scheduling posts, monitoring platform engagement, and reporting on analytics.
  • Assist in developing invasive plant resources, including website content, brochures, games, videos, and other materials.
  • Help coordinate events such as field days, workshops, and training sessions.
  • Participate in targeted invasive plant inventories across various jurisdictions.
  • Assist with manual treatments, including hand-pulling, digging, and cutting of priority invasive plants.
  • Help with the collection, sorting, and release of biological control agents.
  • Assist with data collection and entry tasks.
    Support with additional integrated pest management projects and tasks as required.

Job Requirements

Required Education:

Applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in, or possess, a diploma or undergraduate degree in biology, ecology, natural resources, STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), education (with a science focus), or a related field.
  • Be between 15-30 years old (this is a wage subsidy grant requirement)
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who is legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
  • Have a successful criminal record check
  • Have a valid B.C. driver's license

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Required Skills and Abilities:

Applicants must:

  • Be able to identify key regional invasive plants.
  • Know invasive plant management practices and the principles of integrated pest management.
  • Understand the Provincial Integrated Pest Management Act and Regulation.
  • Be proficient in computers/devices and have the ability to learn new systems/technology.
  • Be proficient in using MS Office suite, including MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Be proficient in using social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.
  • Have good written and oral communication.
  • Have good organizational skills.
  • Have good interpersonal skills.
  • Exercise courtesy, diplomacy, and tact in dealing with officials of business, Regional District staff, government, and the public.
  • Work well as part of a team and independently with little supervision.
  • Work on several projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Be able to establish and maintain effective working relations with other employees, professionals, and the public as necessitated by work assignments.

Applicants must be willing to:

  • Work a Tuesday to Saturday weekly schedule to support attendance at education and outreach events.
  • Work occasional early mornings or evenings to support attendance at education and outreach events.
  • Carry out field work in remote locations and along road right-of-ways, including primary highways.
  • Work outdoors in variable weather and field conditions.
  • Work indirectly with herbicides.
  • Be recorded via video or photos that will be made available publicly in education and outreach resources.
    Work alone when necessary.

This position falls under the provisions of the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 900. The hourly rate for this position is $23.23 [2025 rate] plus 14% in place of benefits.
