Job Summary:

Petra Design is seeking a Concrete Laboratory Technician to support the development, testing, and quality control of advanced concrete products, including GFRC, UHPC, precast concrete, and specialty architectural mixes. This role plays a key part in ensuring material performance, consistency, and compliance with internal standards and industry specifications.

The successful candidate will work closely with production, engineering, and design teams to test materials, document results, and assist in mix development and troubleshooting.

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct laboratory testing on concrete, GFRC, UHPC, and related materials, including but not limited to:

  • Compressive strength
  • Flexural strength
  • Slump, flow, air content, and density
  • Absorption and durability testing

Prepare and batch test mixes according to established formulas and experimental designs

Maintain accurate test records, reports, and quality control documentation

Calibrate, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment

Support quality assurance processes for production batches

Investigate material performance issues and assist with root-cause analysis

Ensure compliance with applicable standards (ASTM, CSA, internal specifications)

Maintain a clean, safe, and organized laboratory environment

Coordinate with production and installation teams as needed

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree (BA or BSc) required, preferably in:

  • Materials Science
  • Civil Engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Construction Technology or a related field

Experience in concrete, construction materials testing, or laboratory work is strongly preferred

Familiarity with concrete, GFRC, UHPC, precast, or cement-based materials is an asset

Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy

Ability to work independently and collaboratively

Physically capable of handling materials and laboratory equipment

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with ASTM and CSA testing standards
  • Knowledge of admixtures, pigments, fibers, and cementitious materials
  • Basic data analysis and report writing
  • Experience in architectural or decorative concrete is an asset
