CBC Thunder Bay - Reporter/Editor

*This is a one year posting*

Please include additional documentation or a link to your online demo or website, blog or video in your cover letter.

Your role:

We are looking for a reporter who is motivated to serve CBC audiences in Thunder Bay and northwestern Ontario. The successful candidate is a strong critical thinker with a track record of digging up news. This person has a passion for the craft of storytelling on multiple platforms: digital, social, radio and video, and a track record of experimenting with new formats and storytelling techniques.

The successful candidate will be an exceptional writer and an experienced, strong chaser of original and enterprise stories. You will explore beyond the obvious and bring stories to light that reflect the full range of experiences and perspectives in this complex region.

You will ensure that all CBC's journalistic standards and practices (JSP) are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve. You will further our original, enterprise storytelling and ensure we are talking about what matters most to people throughout the region.

You use a range of sources including documents, data, access to information laws, and confidential and community sources to uncover news. You are a strong and articulate storyteller who will report live into the local radio programs and news. You seek out ways to share stories from northwestern Ontario on other local and network platforms.

You're innovative and will try new workflows and new story treatments. You inspire others to do the same.

As the industry shifts, local news and community storytelling is more important than ever. You understand the wide range of realities and experiences of the people who live and work in the region and you reflect that breadth in the stories you tell. You are committed to reflecting under-represented people and communities in your journalism.

In the CBC Thunder Bay newsroom, we work together as a team and lift each other up. As a reporter, you will collaborate with others to create content for newscasts, digital platforms, radio programs and visual platforms. You have proven your commitment to an inclusive and respectful workplace culture.

You might be assigned to a work shift that includes occasional or regular 7am starts or 9pm finishes, or an ongoing/ rotating Sunday shift.

Key tasks:

  • Pitch news stories relevant to Thunder Bay and northwestern Ontario on a daily basis

  • Develop and maintain contacts with sources to ensure current knowledge of issues and events.

  • Write, produce and edit journalistic content suitable for a variety of platforms, including audio and visual, digital and broadcast

  • Provide ideas or content for radio current affairs programming

  • Arrange and conduct interviews.

  • Present content on-air in a live environment or on tape

  • Respond quickly to breaking news

  • Monitor developing news through a variety of sources.

  • On occasion, vet or edit stories and scripts written by colleagues.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • A university degree or equivalent with a minimum of three years of recent experience writing news for a major professional online publication or broadcaster.

  • Experience in identifying potential legal issues and journalistic policy violations and ability to act on them.

  • Proven ability to write with appropriate flow, clarity and brevity, and to write/edit engaging headlines, photo captions and teaser summaries.

  • Track record of generating original and innovative stories with creative treatments, including visual storytelling.

  • Experience handling breaking news and quick turnarounds.

  • A team player who is willing to work cooperatively with producers and colleagues in story development and vetting.

  • Working knowledge of the communities in and around Thunder Bay and across northwestern Ontario.

  • Strong understanding and familiarity with social media and the ways it can be creatively used for journalism.

  • Performance skills including strong presentation style and on-air storytelling ability.

  • An aptitude for working with a variety of digital tools. Strong photography skills is an asset.

  • Flexibility with hours of work (including evenings and weekends) and willingness to learn and take on new tasks across all CBC platforms.

  • Solid news judgement and ability to work effectively under newsroom deadline pressure.

  • Proven ability to work independently on stories.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • A full G Ontario driver's licence.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
