The Town of Stony Plain is the local government authority responsible for planning and delivering municipal services in Stony Plain, a Canadian urban community of approximately 18,000 people on the traditional Indigenous lands of Treaty 6 peoples.
The Town of Stony Plain's Utilities division is responsible for the efficient delivery of safe and reliable municipal water, wastewater, and sanitary systems. We are currently hiring for a permanent full-time Utility Technician to be part of this growing team of professionals
Job DescriptionReporting to the Utilities Foreman, the Utility Technician will assist in the daily operation and maintenance of the water distribution system, wastewater collection system, and dewatering system in the Town of Stony Plain. The successful candidate will be driven to provide high-quality service to internal and external clients, with the ambition and capability to trouble shoot problems, and make sound decisions using personal judgment capabilities. This position will also assist other divisions when necessary.
We are seeking a candidate who:
- Has working knowledge of water distribution and wastewater collection systems
- Understands automated control systems (SCADA)
- Has a general understanding of water wells and dewatering systems (asset)
- Has basic knowledge of water reservoir pump house operations (asset)
- Demonstrates excellent communication and public relations skills
- Is able to operate heavy, medium, and light construction equipment
- Can work under demanding physical requirements and varying extreme weather conditions
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Alberta Environment Certification in Water Distribution and/or Wastewater Collection
- Minimum of one (1) year municipal experience working with water and sewer systems.
- Alberta Class 3 drivers license with air brake endorsement

Successful candidates must have the ability to meet the physical demands of the position, which may include prolonged walking, squatting, lifting, pushing, pulling, reaching, kneeling, twisting, and gripping. Please refer to the physical demands analysis for more details.
Based on a 40-hour work week, in accordance with the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 955 Collective Agreement, the rate of pay for this role is experience and certification based and starts at $32.96 per hour. The successful candidate must be willing to work weekend and evening shifts as occasionally required and participate in the standby (on call) schedule as assigned on a rotational basis.
