The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Production Manager to lead the operations of our steel fabrication facility. In this role, you will oversee production, purchasing, workflow optimization, and personnel management under the direction of the VP, Plant Operations. You will champion safety, quality, efficiency, and employee development while ensuring our products are manufactured to the highest standards.
This is a key leadership position for someone who thrives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and is passionate about building strong teams and effective processes.
What you'll do
Responsibilities
Leadership & Culture
• Foster and maintain a strong culture of safety across the facility.
• Lead, coach, and mentor supervisors and production staff to support growth, engagement, and performance.
• Ensure all employees follow company policies, procedures, and safety standards.
• Conduct regular staff meetings to communicate goals, updates, and expectations.
Production Management
• Oversee daily production operations to ensure safe, cost-effective, and timely fabrication.
• Manage and support front-line supervisors, including foremen and lead hands.
• Maintain and update the Shop Production Schedule; adjust priorities as needed based on site changes, drawings, equipment, or staffing.
• Optimize production flow, shop layout, and processes to maximize efficiency and output.
• Ensure all work meets applicable codes, standards, and quality requirements.
• Coordinate closely with Logistics, Engineering, Project Management, Construction, and Drafting teams.
Performance & Continuous Improvement
• Establish and track Key Production Indicators; analyze trends and communicate insights to senior leadership.
• Identify bottlenecks and implement corrective programs or process improvements.
• Support ongoing quality assurance, LEAN initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts.
• Investigate production issues and non-conformities to determine root causes and solutions.
Safety & Compliance
• Ensure all safety orientations, procedures, and practices meet legislative and company standards.
• Work with the Safety Manager and senior leadership to report, investigate, and resolve incidents.
• Participate as a management representative on the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee.
People & Resource Management
• Lead recruitment efforts for production staff and forecast staffing needs.
• Oversee light-duty assignments and monitor progress.
• Conduct performance evaluations for departmental employees.
• Collaborate with Finance and the VP, Plant Operations on budget development and monitoring.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, vendors, and stakeholders.
Equipment & Maintenance
• Work with the Maintenance department to develop and execute equipment maintenance programs.
• Ensure all required maintenance is completed to support safe and efficient operations.
Work Environment
• Modern facility with air conditioning.
• Occasional work in the production shop with exposure to heat, cold, dust, and moderate noise.
• PPE required as per legislation and company policy.
Physical Requirements
• Regular sitting, talking, and listening.
• Occasional reaching, stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally.
• Vision requirements include close vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
Hours of Work
• Monday-Thursday: 6:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
• Friday: 6:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
• Overtime required as needed.
What you'll need
Qualifications
Education & Experience
• High school diploma required; completion of a Construction Administration Technology (CAT) program or related managerial program preferred.
• Minimum 10 years of industry experience in metal fabrication, welding, or related fields.
• Experience at the Foreman, Project Management, or Managerial level.
• Proven ability to supervise 40+ employees in a production environment.
• Working knowledge of OH&S, QA, and LEAN principles.
Skills & Abilities
• Strong leadership, coaching, and communication skills.
• Ability to read, write, and interpret business correspondence and documentation.
• Solid math skills, including percentages, ratios, areas, and volumes.
• Strong problem-solving, conceptual thinking, and spatial visualization abilities.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and production scheduling software (Fabtrol, ERP systems).
Certifications (Assets)
• CAT, QA, Managerial Administrative Certificate
• Welding Supervisor, Welding Red Seal, or Metal Fabrication certificatio
