Position DescriptionAt SPARC BioCentre, we apply mass spectrometry and HPLC technologies for the molecular characterization of biological systems. Our facility is located in the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research & Learning (PGCRL) and is a core facility of the SickKids Research Institute. SPARC provides proteomic and metabolomic expertise for the analysis of complex samples for academic scientists and industrial clients on a fee-for-service basis. The facility is well-equipped with mass spectrometry (MS) platforms including three Thermo Orbitraps (Fusion Lumos and Exploris 480), three Sciex and one Thermo triple quadrupole, and one Bruker timsTOF Pro. We are recruiting a skilled, experienced Laboratory Research Project Coordinator to join our team.
The Laboratory Research Project Coordinator is responsible for applying moderately advanced technical knowledge and skills to perform complex laboratory procedures and experiments. In this role, you may also modify existing techniques and procedures as required. Assignments are broadly outlined and the responsibilities allow latitude for planning and modifying methods and techniques.
Here's What You'll Get To Do
- Pursue a research project within the group
- Be responsible for the organization of the laboratory on a daily basis, including the organization and work of others within the group
- Perform specialized technical work of a professional nature
- Plan and conduct technical procedures including the organization of data and formulation of conclusions
- Collaborate in preparation of seminars and presentations
- Be responsible for preparation of regulatory protocols
- Participate in ad hoc committees within the research institute
- Organize the laboratory, including ordering supplies, budgeting, and developing new techniques or methods
- Provide continuity and be a source of information on research
- Make decisions concerning own research project subject to consultation with investigator
- Exercise significant independent judgment initiative and decision making in consultation with the investigator to resolve technical problems (e.g. interpretation of test results, modification of techniques and procedures)
- Lead self and peers by conduct and example
- Contribute toward development of guidelines, procedures and standards
- Provide functional supervision to more junior research employees
- Interact frequently with internal contacts and occasionally with external contacts
- Prepare discussions and status reports on normal business processes in written, verbal or graphical form as required
- Present the outcome of research projects to the department, members of the research community, conferences, and international meetings
- Test and validate existing metabolomics protocols and establish standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Liaise with existing and potential clients (via email, phone, in person) to discuss researchprojects, provide recommendations on experimental design, and review results
- Extract analytes from complex samples for MS analysis
- Operate and monitor MS instruments including performing minor instrumentation and related computer maintenance tasks
- Analyze MS results using various software programs and disseminate results to clients
- Assist with proteomics experiments when required
- Help to develop and/or implement new technologies and services under supervision
- Keep abreast of new related technologies and applications by reading manuscripts, listening to seminars/webinars, occasionally attending conferences, and liaising with sales representatives
- Collaborate in the preparation of seminars, posters and presentations; present data at lab meetings, workshops, conferences, etc.
- Assist with drafting research manuscripts including compiling data, deposition of data, and preparation of figures and tables
- Work as part of a cooperative, knowledgeable, experienced team

Here's What You'll Need
- Master of Science or PhD degree or equivalent experience in an area relevant to metabolomics, proteomics, mass spectrometry, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, or similar field
- Experience operating LCMS equipment and analyzing MS results
- Knowledge of Sciex, Thermo, and/or Bruker LCMS equipment an asset
- Demonstrated competency in written and verbal communications
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Committed to continuous learning and improvement
- Demonstrated competency in written and verbal communications
- must have experience running mass-spectrometry-based Biocrates matabolomics assays
