Employment Type:
Full-time

Experience:

About Us:

BUILDCHECK is a groundbreaking start-up developing AI to help general contractors, architects, and real estate developers detect design issues early on. We help our clients minimize costly city comments, RFIs, and change orders by proactively identifying design challenges. See more at:

Position Overview:

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced MEP Specialist to review mechanical, electrical, plumbing and other technical drawings and related documents for errors, omissions, and inconsistencies. This role is critical in ensuring the accuracy, efficiency, and coordination of plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems with other disciplines before documents progress to permitting, bidding, or construction.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in MEP design and construction documentation, coupled with excellent analytical skills and the ability to identify coordination issues across disciplines.

Key Responsibilities:

Quality Assurance & Control:

  • Review, verify and judge the severity of generated outputs for accuracy, relevance, and consistency.
  • Identify and document any design errors, omissions, or inconsistencies flagged.
  • Ensure outputs align with industry standards and meet the requirements of contractors, architects, and real estate developers.
  • Review MEP drawing sets (HVAC, power, lighting, low voltage, plumbing, equipment schedules) and cross-check against architectural, structural, civil and other disciplines.
  • Provide clear, concise written comments and markups.

Collaboration with Product Team:

  • Work closely with the product team to understand the intended functionality of AI features.
  • Provide feedback to developers and data scientists on potential improvements in the AI model based on real-world QA findings.

Documentation & Reporting:

  • Document findings, categorize issues, and track trends in output errors or missed issues.
  • Generate reports on QA outcomes to inform ongoing AI model training and improvements.
  • Support the development of quality-control checklists and internal review standards.

Requirements:

  • Academic Background:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with Construction Drawings:
Strong ability to interpret MEP drawings and schematics (HVAC, power, lighting, low voltage, plumbing, equipment schedules). Should be familiar with large-scale vertical construction project sets, including high-rises, hospitals, stadiums etc.
  • Experience in Construction Management:
Ability to understand and interpret how construction trades will read drawings and how things can be built, to inform their judgement of discovered drawing errors, omissions, conflicts, and constructability issues.
  • Attention to Detail:
A meticulous eye for spotting inconsistencies, errors, and constructability issues in complex drawing sets.
  • Analytical Mindset:
Ability to analyze patterns in mechanical errors and suggest improvements to AI training data.
  • Tech-Savvy:
Comfortable using design review tools such as Bluebeam overlays and markups; exposure to mechanical design software is a plus.
  • Strong Communication Skills:
Ability to clearly document findings and communicate effectively with remote teams.

Preferred Attributes:

  • Experience in peer-review or design quality assurance roles for mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of common causes of RFIs and change orders related to HVAC and plumbing design.
  • Familiarity with North American building standards.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple assignments.
  • Collaborative mindset with a focus on problem-solving and adding value to project delivery.
