The program head provides academic and first-point-of-contact leadership for students, faculty and staff in their assigned program. The program head works closely with the academic chair and program faculty, staff, and administration on a daily basis to assist students to achieve success through quality education and training delivery.

This position will be part of a provincial team supporting CCA programming at Sask Polytech. The position will be based in Regina and will support faculty/students at that site. Some travel may be required to collaborate with faculty & staff at other campuses, and to supervise faculty teaching in clinical placement settings.

General Accountability

The program head provides academic and first-point-of contact leadership for students, faculty and staff in their assigned program. The program head works closely with the academic chair and program faculty, staff, and administration on a daily basis to assist students to achieve success through quality education and training delivery.

Nature & Scope

Based in Saskatoon, the program head reports to the academic chair, School of Nursing. It may be necessary for the program head to travel for program and administrative responsibilities including participation in inter-site committees. The School of Nursing provides Continuing Care Assistants certificates. The CCA program offers general, introductory, and specialized courses in a variety of disciplines through varied delivery methods.

The primary role is to provide a link between the program faculty, staff and students to the academic chair with the purpose to maintain effective communication and support. This will include coordinating between the program and external stakeholders such as industry, accrediting agencies, other educational institutions and business sectors or government as they relate to programming needs. The program head will assist in developing and monitoring the program's financial resources and recommending efficiencies as required.

The program head initiates curriculum development and renewal at the program level, is responsible for liaison with student affairs among a range of student services and provides academic advising and monitoring. This includes student recruitment and retention and managing confidential student issues.

The program head will participate in staff recruitment/selection, orientation, and coaching and mentoring staff for their program areas. Of particular focus will be supporting teaching staff to model excellence using Saskatchewan Polytechnic Instructor Competencies. The program head in collaboration with the Academic Chair, will facilitate assessment of faculty.

1. Academic Leadership and Administration

  • Monitor delivery of quality programming responsive to the needs of students, business/industry and the public.
  • Champion and facilitate academic activity for the program areas including curriculum development and delivery, instructional methods and academic standards, ensuring commonality of program standards and outcomes.
  • Lead and support with clear and consistent student-centered program operations with a focus on excellence in service, safety and program delivery.
  • Monitor the quality of academic offerings by monitoring and implementing sound academic policies and procedures including preparing reports for and participating in Program Advisory Committees.
  • Participate in program accreditation and review involving relevant internal and external stakeholder groups. Identify and develop proposals for Integrated Development Fund projects.
  • Recommend appropriate opportunities for applied research projects or other learning and research opportunities.
  • Provide content expertise to Continuing Education Consultants/Education Consultants including quality assurance regarding brokerage and outreach programs.
  • Represent the program on School committees as assigned by Academic Chair.
  • Monitor adherence to policy regarding intellectual property.

2. Student Affairs

  • Monitor and lead the daily operations of program activities related to student matters.
  • Participate in student recruitment initiatives that promote academic programs and services to potential students.
  • Participate in student enrolment and orientation strategies to ensure consistent student onboarding experiences.
  • Participate and support strategies to ensure full intakes of students into programs, monitor attrition, and ensure implementation of student success and enrolment management measures.
  • Champion and model diversity to support an inclusive and supportive environment for all learners and staff. This will include strategies and programs to support aboriginal student success and achievement, international and newcomer to Canada programs, disability and learner success models and other like programs or supports.
  • Support the identification of supports for student development and services. Where able, act as a liaison for staff and students to ensure supports are identified for student success.
  • Act as a first point of contact for student complaints and academic advising and mediate between students and faculty as necessary.
  • Carry out transfer of credit and prior learning assessment reviews as assigned.

3. Program Leadership

  • Promote teamwork and good communication while leading staff and faculty to reflect and model the values of Saskatchewan Polytechnic.
  • Foster an organizational environment that encourages personal productivity, job satisfaction and the professional growth of faculty and employees in the program areas.
  • Foster a culture of organizational safety and security.
  • Participate in employment activities as required including participation in selection, orientation, training, workload assignment and scheduling for program faculty and employees, including acting as the first point of contact for troubleshooting any issues.

  • Relationship Management

Internal

  • Represent the School on internal committees and teams as assigned by the academic chair.
  • Build and maintain relationships across both academic and administrative divisions, and with Saskatchewan Polytechnic students with specific attention to the students of the School.

External

  • Develop and maintain relationships with external agencies, educational and government organizations, colleges and universities as related to programming issues and agreements, and to remain current with their priorities and plans.
  • Represent the School and Saskatchewan Polytechnic at relevant business, industry, community and sector functions as required.

5. Resource Allocation

  • Manage program resources on a day-to-day basis to ensure program delivery effectiveness and contribute to the development and implementation of the Multi-Year Business Plan at the program level.
  • Contribute to preliminary aspects of the budget development process by submitting requests for initial operating and capital requirements.
  • Monitor expenditures for day-to-day supplies and equipment spending and ensure expenditures remain within the budget assigned to the program. Where required, escalate in accordance with management authorities grid requirements.
  • Implement and coordinate innovative solutions to resource challenges.
  • Identify and recommend opportunities for external partnerships that could assist in resource contributions.

6. Strategic Planning

  • Contribute program perspective to strategic planning and implement program changes in alignment with strategic initiatives.
  • Identify program priorities and initiatives and implement at the program level
  • Identify future trends/program development opportunities which may include engagement with external or internal stakeholders

Duties

Required Qualifications, Skills and Abilities (QSA)

  1. Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with a Degree in Nursing or Education or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan or Registered Psychiatric Nurses' Association of Saskatchewan.
  3. Minimum two years relevant experience in geriatric care (i.e. Long-Term Care, Rehabilitation, Home Care, Community Care or Acute Care Medical Units).
  4. Effective instructional ability.
  5. Effective interpersonal skills.
  6. Effective communication (oral and written) skills.
  7. Demonstrated competence and recent experience in the use of the internet, e-mail, MS Office Suite software and the ability to learn and adapt to changing technology.
