What's the role
Shell is seeking a Senior Operations Support Engineer to join their team at the Shell Sarnia Refinery.
This role provides process engineering support to the 24/7 production organization, ensuring excellence in process safety, reliability, margin, energy optimization, and cost management. The engineer works closely with the Production Team to provide technical assurance for unit operations and to support the delivery of the production plan. Additionally, the role plays a key part in continuous improvement, project development, and turnaround planning and execution.
The Operations Support Engineer is typically assigned specific process units to support as part of an area Production Team. At times, the engineer may instead be assigned to key studies, projects, or improvement initiatives. The successful candidate will join the Sarnia Process Engineering Team and will be assigned an area of support based on their experience and available opportunities.
In addition, this role currently offers a hybrid schedule with the ability to work remotely 2 days per week, and the other 3 days per week from the Shell Sarnia refinery.
Accountabilities:
- Perform proactive technical monitoring and ensure units operate within limits
- Troubleshoot operating issues
- Build management of change for small and medium unit changes
- Identify and communicate threats and opportunities to performance and reliability
- Provide technical expertise and optimization strategies to meet business goals, including feed/product quality and energy/cost efficiency
- Lead unit alarm reviews and support alarm management
- Apply fact-based root cause analysis to investigate and resolve threats
- Provide technical input to turnaround and major maintenance activities: scope development, challenge, and shutdown/start-up procedures, and inspections
- Develop investment proposals for capital unit items in discipline
- Support capital projects through commissioning
- Collaborate across disciplines to meet HSSE requirements with cost-effective, fit-for-purpose solutions
- Active participation in Process Hazard Analyses to assess and mitigate safety risks
- Mentor junior process engineers
- Provide technical sign-off and P.Eng approval for work in own unit and for junior engineers supporting other units
- Serve as part of the emergency response team, with the potential to be on call as needed
What you bring
- Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
- Must have a bachelor's degree in engineering, preferably in Chemical Engineering
- Must have a valid P.Eng license in Canada, or demonstrate significant progress toward obtaining one, supported by documentation included in the application
- At least 7 years relevant experience in a similar role, ideally in an operating oil and gas asset or in projects / design
- Demonstrates sufficient technical expertise to approve the work of junior process engineers
- Causal reasoning training is an asset
- Ability to work outside of regular hours to support turnarounds and emergencies
- Ability to be rostered on call as part of the emergency response team
If you don't see yourself fully reflected in every job requirement listed in the posting above, we still encourage you to reach out and apply. We are committed to creating a more equitable, inclusive, and diverse company and we strongly encourage applicants of all genders, ages, ethnicities, cultures, abilities, sexual orientations, and life experiences to apply.
After you submit your application, you will receive an email providing a link to an online assessment that is a mandatory part of the process and must be successfully completed within 3 days of receiving the initial assessment invite. The email will come from HireVue - please check your spam/junk mailbox if you do not see the email. Once completed, your application will be reviewed to determine the next steps.
