Position Title:    LIFE SKILLS WORKER

Reports to: Manager, Social Services

Job Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Social Services, Life Skills Worker is part of a multi-disciplinary team and provides direct support and training to Haisla Nation community members to develop the skills necessary to lead independent, healthy, and fulfilling lives. The Life Skills worker promotes personal growth and well-being by developing culturally relevant programming, delivering one-on-one and group sessions, and connecting clients with additional resources and services as needed.

We are about 2023+ people, with approximately 700 living in Kitamaat Village. We have lived off the land and waters of our traditional territory for thousands of years, and it remains the focus of all we do.

Duties & Responsibilities

Life Skills Program Delivery:

  • Develop and implement life skills training programs tailored to the needs of the Haisla community.
  • Ensure that all programs are designed and delivered culturally appropriately, reflecting the values and traditions of the Haisla Nation.
  • Facilitate group workshops, one-on-one sessions, and community outreach programs to teach essential life skills.
  • Provide individualized support to clients, helping them to identify personal goals and skills development.
  • Assist and advocate for clients with accessing community services, including housing, education, healthcare, and employment resources.
  • Facilitate access to counseling, therapy, or other mental health resources, ensuring that emotional well-being is prioritized in all life skills programs
  • Collaborate with schools, youth centers, and community organizations to deliver youth-specific life skills programming.
  • Provide crisis intervention support when clients face immediate challenges that affect their safety or well-being.
  • Work with clients to develop conflict resolution skills, helping them navigate interpersonal or family conflicts in a constructive way.

Administrative Duties:

  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure the privacy and security of records.
  • Prepare reports on program success, challenges, and areas for improvement.
  • Monitor client outcomes to assess the effectiveness of life skills training programs, adjusting as needed to better meet community needs.
  • Establish partnerships with local organizations, government agencies, and other community services to expand access to resources for clients.
  • Attend community meetings and events to stay informed about emerging needs and opportunities for collaboration.
  • Perform other tasks within scope of position as required.

Skills & Qualifications

  • High School Diploma supplemented by training or certificates relating to social work, child and youth care, counseling, or a related field or equivalent combination of experience.
  • 1 to 3 years of recent related experience.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and mental health care.
  • Experience in youth work, social services, or life skills training.
  • Strong relationship building skills and the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
  • Strong planning, organization and time management skills with ability to be self-directed.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, discretion and adherence to confidentiality requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and various databases, search engines and Outlook/email.
  • Knowledge of First Nations Culture and working in a First Nation's community is an asset.
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).
