Overview
Do you have experience in identifying, assessing, and developing controls for risks in industrial environments? Have you developed and applied frameworks supporting the management of multiple risks? If this sounds like you, consider joining our growing team in Prevention Risk Management Services. As an Industrial Risk Specialist, you will lead and support risk-based projects, influence stakeholders throughout the province, and advise on risk-based strategies.
Prevention Risk Management Services at WorkSafeBC focuses on risks to workers in BC, including those that cannot be readily identified and analyzed using existing, internal WorkSafeBC data sources. Categories of risks include catastrophic risks, emerging risks, slow acting harms, and risks that are undetected, underreported, or misdiagnosed. We are particularly interested in candidates who bring experience or insight into the safety implications of AI technologies, automation systems, and robotics.

Where you'll work
At WorkSafeBC, we offer a hybrid work model that combines working remotely, and in our offices based on the operational needs of the position.
- Assess contributory risk factors and potential risk controls through the application of risk assessment frameworks, including bow tie analysis, HAZOP (Hazard and Operability study), FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), processing mapping and analysis, and other risk assessment frameworks as appropriate
- Develop, refine and implement frameworks for risk assessment and risk management tools to enhance organizational risk intelligence and inform strategic decision-making for both internal and external interest holders.
- Identify and assess regulatory frameworks relevant to contributory factors and risk control, and review regulatory frameworks in other jurisdictions
- Lead multi-disciplinary teams in conducting thorough risk assessments and evaluations and identify gaps in current risk control measures.
- Where required, travel within the province to liaise with government agencies, employers, professional bodies and industry associations to inform on and influence the practical application of risk-based approaches in industrial environments
- Consistently models the appropriate level of organizational behaviours expected of all WorkSafeBC employees: responsive, respectful, fair, collaborative, accountable, and forward thinking.

- Exhibit superior verbal and written communication skills, and exceptional organizational skills
- Understand and communicate the safety implications of AI and automation technologies.
- Stay current with industry trends in AI, robotics, and functional safety
- Consistently models the appropriate level of organizational behaviours expected of all WorkSafeBC employees: responsive, respectful, fair, collaborative, accountable, and forward thinking.
Your background and experience:
- A master's degree in a related field and a minimum of three years of experience in industrial risk assessment and risk management or
- A bachelor's degree in a related field and a minimum of four years of experience in industrial risk assessment and risk management
- A recognized occupational health and safety certification is an asset (e.g., CRSP, CSP, ROH, CIH, COHN)
- A recognized certification or designation addressing aspects of risk assessment and risk management is an asset (e.g. CRM, P. Eng)
- Additional certifications in AI/automation safety are highly desirable.
- Working knowledge of project management practices and applications
- Experience advising on or overseeing automation projects (e.g., robotic arms, AGVs, sensor systems, IoT deployments) is preferred.
- Familiarity with AI/ML concepts such as model outputs, confidence intervals, false positives/negatives, and model drift is preferred.
- Training or certification in functional safety (e.g., IEC 61508, ISO or robotics safety is an asset.
