CAKI Fabrication Ltd. is a newly established welding and fabrication company based in Central Alberta, specializing in structural steel, custom fabrication, and specialty projects. We are currently seeking a highly-skilled Journeyman Welder/Fabricator to join our growing team.
This is a hands-on, senior-level role requiring advanced fabrication skills, strong welding abilities, and a high-degree of independence and accountability. The successful candidate will play an important role in helping CAKI Fabrication establish and operate within a CWB (CSA W47.1) certified welding environment, with potential for future advancement into a lead or Welding Supervisor role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform welding using GMAW, FCAW, and SMAW (GTAW as required), and other processes as required
- Perform welding in accordance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS)
- Support quality control, inspection, and documentation requirements in a CWB-controlled environment
- Work closely with management and retained welding engineering support during CWB certification and audits
- Assist with weld inspection, fit-up verification, and identification of non-conformances
- Maintain accurate job, weld, and inspection records as required
- Uphold CSA W47.1 / W59 fabrication and welding standards
- Demonstrate leadership by setting a high standard for quality, safety, and workmanship on the shop floor
- Competent in welding aluminum and stainless steel (considered an asset; steel fabrication is the primary focus)
- Fabricate metal structures from start to finish, including layout, fitting, tacking, welding, and finishing
- Interpret and work from detailed technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications
- Use fabrication tools and machinery (e.g., band saws, brakes, shears, grinders, plasma cutters) with a high level of competency
- Ensure precise layout, fitting, and assembly of components
- Conduct routine equipment maintenance and inspections
- Communicate clearly, openly, directly, and frequently with customers, team members, and senior management to ensure expectations are met and projects remain on track
- Travel to off-site job locations as required
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
- Adhere to company and industry safety standards at all times
- Other duties as required
- This role does not carry formal Welding Supervisor authority unless and until designated and supported by the company
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Alberta-certified Journeyman Welder (required)
- Valid CWB welder certifications (or ability to obtain immediately upon hire)
- Demonstrated experience working in a CSA W47.1 / W59 structural steel environment
- Strong understanding of WPS compliance, weld quality requirements, and inspection expectations
- Experience with GMAW, FCAW, and SMAW (GTAW as required)
- Structural steel and/or custom fabrication experience (required)
- Proficient in blueprint reading, layout, fitting, and tolerance control
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including documentation and reporting
- Ability to work independently while maintaining strict quality and safety standards
- Interest in pursuing Welding Supervisor qualification or lead responsibilities is considered a strong asset
Additional Assets (Strongly Preferred):
- Previous experience acting as a lead hand, senior welder, or informal supervisor
- Familiarity with CWB audit, third-party inspections, or quality management systems
- Experience coordinating with engineers or inspectors
Additional Requirements:
- Valid driver's license; recent driver's abstract may be requested for insurance purposes
- Compliance with company drug and alcohol policy, including potential for random testing for safety-sensitive positions, as permitted under Alberta law
Working Conditions:
- Occasional extended hours, emergency work, or project-based scheduling may be required
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Work may occur indoors, outdoors, at heights, and in active construction environments
- Exposure to welding/fabrication-related hazards
- Must always wear appropriate PPE and follow safety protocols
- Overtime may be required
