POSITION SUMMARY
Employees of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia (Assembly) provide professional non-partisan services to support the democratic institution of Parliament and its members through procedural advice, administrative support and information services. The Assembly is an autonomous employer, separate from the administrative framework of B.C. government ministries and agencies.
The Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms is seeking a strategic, passionate and service-oriented individual for the regular full-time position of Director, Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms.
Reporting to the Sergeant-at-Arms, the Director, Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms is an active member of the SAA leadership team and accountable for managing a diverse portfolio of operational and business support services with a direct impact on front-line operations. The Director is responsible for developing and executing strategies, plans, and performance measures that align with organizational strategic priorities and initiatives, with the primary goal of improving and optimizing the safety and security programs. The SAA departmental organizational structure has diverse program portfolios reporting to the Sergeant-at-Arms for operational and strategic program support, while the Director provides leadership for strategic business operations. The SAA leadership team actively partner across teams, fostering strong relationships and frequent collaboration to drive shared strategic priorities. The SAA department is a diverse department comprised of approximately 100 staff members in a variety of roles, ranging from administrative to ceremonial support when the House is in session to Legislative Assembly Protective Services Officers.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must be/have:
- Post-secondary education in business administration, public administration, finance, or other related program, plus at least seven years of experience* working in a senior leadership capacity or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
*Relevant experience may include:
- Leading and overseeing program planning, service design, delivery, transformation, and integration initiatives in a large, multi-faceted organization.
- Developing operational policies and procedures to ensure effective program management.
- Managing complex organizational resource challenges (e.g. people, materials, budget).
- Leading in a professional environment (e.g. managing workloads and employee performance, coaching and mentoring, goal setting and leading the resolution of HR/performance issues).
- Championing and implementing continuous improvement initiatives to reflect the changing needs of the organization.
- Effectively consulting with and guiding teams to develop employees to drive efficiencies and enhance services to further the goals of the organization.
Preference may be given to candidates with the following:
- Experience working in a parliamentary or public sector environment.
- Experience in leading change in a policing or a law enforcement environment and understanding a law enforcement culture would be considered an asset.
