What you will do:

As an Outdoor Maintenance Student in the Parks, Forestry and Cemetery Services Division, from May 4, 2026 through to September 4, 2026 your primary responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Turf: Grass cutting, trimming and general clean-up.
  • Sports: Parks and sports field maintenance, garbage collection, daily washroom maintenance, general repair and upkeep within parks.
  • Waterloo Park and Special Events: facilitate special events, garbage collection, daily washroom maintenance, general repair and upkeep within Waterloo Park.
  • Horticulture: Install and maintain planting beds, planters and hanging baskets. Greenhouse plant care activities.
  • Forestry: Tree planting, watering, and basic tree care.
  • Cemeteries: Grass cutting, trimming, general clean-up and assist with burials within Parkview and Mount Hope cemeteries.
  • Playgrounds/Splash Pads: Assist with regular inspections and maintenance of playgrounds and splash pads. Grass cutting, trimming and general clean-up.

What you will bring:

  • Landscaping/horticulture and maintenance experience desired, including experience operating power equipment, lawn care machinery and/or hand tools.
  • Able to lift up to 50lbs. and perform the physical demands, including lifting, bending and kneeling on a regular basis.
  • Willing and able to work in an outdoor environment and actively participate in daily activities in various weather conditions.
  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Must be currently enrolled in full time school and returning to school full time in the fall of 2026.
  • A passion for promoting and maintaining a healthy and safe workplace and the ability to work respectfully and effectively in a team environment.

  • Valid MTO 'G' class driver's licence in good standing with driver's abstract acceptable to the City is preferred (zero demerit points; maximum of 1 convictions within the previous 36 months; no driving related criminal code convictions within the previous 36 months; and no ignition interlock restrictions).

  • A Police Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check with results satisfactory to the City.
  • Proof of your current and valid certificate(s), licenses and/or educational qualifications, if applicable.
  • Must be available for in person interview on February 19, 2026 or February 24, 2026.
  • Must be available to work full-time from May 4, 2026 to September 4, 2026.
  • Must be available to attend mandatory training will take place the week of May 4, 2026.

Hours of work:

  • Students will work up to 37.5 hours per week. A typical shift is 8 hours per day, scheduled based on operational requirements including days, evenings, weekends and holidays between the hours of 6 AM and 11 PM.

Rate of Pay:

  • G class Driver Rate of Pay: $22.97 per hour
  • Non-driver Rate of Pay: $22.70 per hour
