Social Worker

Cook's Ferry Indian Band

Merritt & Spences Bridge, British Columbia

The Cook's Ferry Indian Band is a Nlakapamux government located in the Central Interior Region of British Columbia, with 26 reserves situated throughout the Thompson River Valley between Ashcroft and Lytton and the Nicola Valley, including Merritt. Deeply connected to land, culture, and community well-being, the Band is committed to supporting individuals and families through culturally grounded, community-led services.

Cook's Ferry Indian Band is seeking a Social Worker to provide hands-on, community-based support to individuals, children, and families. This role is focused on direct service delivery, relationship-based practice, and helping members navigate systems of care in a respectful, responsive, and culturally appropriate way.

This position is a member of the leadership team and reports directly to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), contributing to coordinated, community-centred service delivery across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

The Social Worker works directly with individuals, children, and families who require social supports, providing practical, responsive, and relationship-based assistance. This includes completing assessments, developing care plans, and connecting members to appropriate internal and external services. You will provide ongoing follow-up and advocacy to ensure supports remain effective and responsive over time.

The role includes supporting families affected by child welfare matters, including prevention, reunification, and reintegration where appropriate. You will advocate with the Ministry of Children and Family Development to promote culturally appropriate outcomes and to ensure the needs and perspectives of families are respectfully represented.

You will support social assistance clients by assisting with applications, documentation, and required forms, helping members navigate complex systems and reduce barriers to access. As part of a community-centred approach, you will build and maintain an inventory of community and regional service resources and work collaboratively with internal programs and external partners to support coordinated community services.

In this leadership role, you are expected to bring a proactive and forward-looking mindset, operating with objectivity, professionalism, and sound judgment. You will respond effectively to urgent and real-time needs, work independently while remaining aligned with organizational priorities and community values, and consistently bring forward practical, solution-oriented recommendations. Participation in community events, collaboration with colleagues and leadership, accurate documentation, and contribution to continuous program improvement are integral to this role.

The Ideal Candidate

You are a Registered Social Worker (RSW) in British Columbia, with several years of relevant experience providing community-based support to individuals and families. Current C6 Delegation through the Ministry of Children and Family Development, or eligibility to obtain delegation, is required.

You demonstrate strong cultural humility, empathy, and relationship-building skills, and you are able to engage respectfully with community members, colleagues, and external service providers. You are comfortable responding to urgent situations, balancing competing priorities, and working both independently and collaboratively within a leadership team.

Experience working with Indigenous communities or within a First Nation environment, understanding of Indigenous governance processes, and knowledge of local language or culture are considered strong assets. A valid Class 5 driver's licence and the ability to travel between communities are required.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this position is $80,000–$95,000, commensurate with education and experience. Cook's Ferry Indian Band offers a comprehensive benefits package, including generous vacation entitlement, paid time off during the Christmas office closure, statutory holidays, health and dental coverage, travel support funding, an employer-matched pension plan, paid professional fees, and career development opportunities. Relocation assistance will be provided.

The Location & Travel

This position is based in Merritt and Spences Bridge, British Columbia, with regular travel required between both communities. Hybrid work arrangements are possible, balanced with the need for in-person engagement, relationship-building, and community presence.
