Position Overview
Kiewit Industrial and Water Engineering (KIWE) is seeking a Senior-Level Mechanical Engineer. This role is located in Calgary, Alberta to support projects in the US and Canada, with required travel to the US. We are looking for ideal candidates to grow the Kiewit team by helping establish, maintain, and improve company standards and tools while also utilizing these standards and tools to contribute to project success, leading projects and engineering teams for our Industrial projects.
Candidates shall have a minimum of 10 years of experience in mechanical or process engineering, including specific experience with one or more of the following: biogas, bulk solids material handling, water and wastewater treatment, pump stations and pipeline conveyance, groundwater remediation, stormwater recycling, process piping, industrial boilers and chillers, Data center cooling systems, CDU's and computer room air handling units. In this role, you will be hands on involved in the mechanical designs, as well as mentoring and developing more junior engineers.

Our rapidly growing Industrial and Water Engineering Group, which includes mechanical, process, electrical, controls, structural, architectural, geotechnical, and civil disciplines, is a multi-faceted and leading-edge division of Kiewit with best-in-class technical expertise focused on EPC and design-build delivery of industrial projects in markets such as Consumer Products, Heavy Manufacturing, Industrial Buildings, Pulp and Paper, Mineral Processing, Renewable Natural Gas, and Industrial Water and Utilities.
Location
This position is located at our Calgary AB office. We will provide relocation to Calgary, from other areas of Canada.
Responsibilities
- Provide design, coordination, and oversight of various mechanical systems typical for biogas, bulk solids material handling, water and wastewater treatment, pump stations and pipeline conveyance, groundwater remediation, stormwater recycling, and other industrial facilities including, but not limited to, process piping, conveying systems, dust collection, general plant/facility water, compressed air, steam, gas systems, cooling systems, chillers, Cooling distribution units (CDU's), Computer room air handling units (CRAH), fan walls and containment walls for air cooling. Mechanical system design includes preparing calculations for both pressurized and gravity driven systems to size lines, material selection, and correct Code requirement application.
- Manage the completion of all project design calculations and equipment specifications typical for biogas, bulk solids material handling, water and wastewater treatment, pump stations and pipeline conveyance, groundwater remediation, stormwater recycling, and other industrial facilities including, but not limited to, bulk solids conveyors, dust collection equipment, bins/tanks, pumps, heat exchangers, boilers, and other process equipment.
- Coordinate and communicate all aspects of the project's mechanical design within multi-disciplinary teams; including the management and oversight of third party engineering.
- Review project contracts, customer Requests for Proposals (RFPs), professional service agreements, or other contractual documents and incorporate into the design as required to ensure the project meets or exceeds project goals.
- Provide oversight and coordination of projects, working with the assigned design managers and project managers, to meet project budgets and schedules for all mechanical discipline activities.
- Manage other design partners (both internal and external) including construction partners, equipment suppliers, and other engineers and designers assigned to the project or task and review work progress and results.
- Perform detailed technical bid analyses for equipment typical for biogas, bulk solids material handling, water and wastewater treatment, pump stations and pipeline conveyance, groundwater remediation, stormwater recycling, and other industrial facilities.
- Generate and check design deliverables such as PFD's, P&ID's, process simulations, datasheets, and vendor shop drawings in accordance with industry codes and standards, contract requirements, and company standards.
- Support the construction team including representing the design team on-site, answering RFI's, providing creative design solutions, etc.
- Develop schedules, work assignments, and staffing requirements to ensure successful project completion.
- Perform early project design work such as conceptual studies, process flow diagram development, mass/energy balances, preliminary equipment sizing and selection, and general facility layout/arrangement.
- Train, mentor, and advise peers and support staff on proper application of industry standards and best practices.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent engineering program from an ABET accredited four-year university.
- P.eng required
- A minimum of 10 years of industry related engineering experience performing functions as outlined above. Prefer individuals with Water, or Wastewater treatment experience, Campus/Industrial Energy experience, Data Centers, or other processing facilities. Experience calculating piping pressure and flow rates required, experience developing as-builts, P&ID's, equipment lists, line lists, valve lists, and system descriptions for BOP systems required
- Experience leading an engineering and design team as well as leading projects, is required at this level.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient in basic computing programs including the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Preferred experience utilizing AFT Fathom or AFT Arrow hydraulic simulation software (or equivalent).
