Reporting to the Deputy Sheriff, Sergeant, the Deputy Sheriff is a uniformed Peace Officer responsible through statutory authority for security, prisoner management, and civil enforcement duties in relation to the Justice of the Peace Court, Nunavut Court of Justice, and Nunavut Court of Appeal at the Nunavut Justice Centre in Iqaluit and circuit sitting throughout the Territory. The incumbent holds the legislated statutory appointment of Deputy Sheriff and acts as a Peace Officer pursuant to Section 2 of the Criminal Code.

The Deputy Sheriff's key responsibilities are, but are not limited to:  

• Ensure safety and security by providing comprehensive security services at all locations where the Nunavut Court of Justice sits, including conducting security checks, operating security equipment, and ensuring the safety of the judiciary, staff, and the public.
• Provide protective services for judges and court staff, including transportation as needed, conduct risk assessments of security threats, and work with the Deputy/Sheriff Sergeant and Sheriff to ensure a security plan is in place.
• Follow SOPs and policies to ensure the secure transportation of prisoners between correctional facilities, police cells, and court locations, and supervise prisoners within court facilities.
• Ensure the proper administration of jury trials, including the timely service of jury summons, managing juror excusals, conducting security reviews, and performing all duties required under the Jury Act.
• Execute civil enforcement duties, including effecting lawful seizures and evictions based on the instructions of counsel and lawful writs and orders, and handle financial transactions related to enforcement.
• Accept and process payments into court, including garnishee monies and proceeds of sale under various legislations, and perform accounting functions including bank reconciliations and disbursements from Sheriff Trust Accounts.
• Work collaboratively with the Deputy/Sheriff Sergeant, Sheriff, Executive Legal Officer, Court Administration, and other stakeholders to maintain accurate records and verify court documents.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a high school diploma or equivalent, the completion of the JIBC Nunavut Sheriff Training Program or a similar program from a recognized institution in Canada and experience working in Court Administration. A valid Class 5 driver's license is also required for the job. Assets include a Criminal Justice Diploma or equivalent, experience working in rural, remote or northern communities as well as First Aid, CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certifications.

Successful appointees must be able to meet eligibility and screening criteria for appointment as a Peace Officer and Deputy Sheriff, qualify and obtain a Class 4 driver's license within the probationary period. In addition, the successful appointee must complete all training identified via the Nunavut Sheriff Training Program Guidelines within identified timeframes as required, including but not limited to training on Force Response Options, Baton, OC Spray, CEW, Legal Studies, Crisis intervention and intervention, Prisoner Management, First Aid, CPR and AED certifications and must maintain certification credentials during the employment period or as directed.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
