Position Title: Governance Coordinator – Full-time Permanent – January 2026 start date

Position Description: The role of the Governance Coordinator is to plan and efficiently execute Fort William First Nation's (FWFN) three main governance initiatives: membership law; election act; and governing constitution. The Governance Coordinator will define the project objectives and deliverables and ensure measurable outcomes which reflect Fort William First Nation vision, traditions, culture, and values.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Direct and execute community governance capacity development for the three main governance initiatives: membership law; election act; and governing constitution
  • Begin governance strategic planning and constitution development process
  • Develop full-scale project work plan and associated communication documents
  • Develop communication strategy for FWFN Membership to ensure optimal transparency and understanding
  • Coordinate community focus groups and workshops on and off-reserve which may include: correspondence, engagement materials, travel, speakers, venues, and logistics
  • Develop and deliver strategic issue presentations and progress reports to Community and Leadership
  • Schedule, coordinate and lead the Governance Committee meetings, including taking minutes, setting the agenda, ensuring proper administrative tasks are complete
  • Assist and provide technical assistance to other related Fort William First Nation Committees
  • Assist with the creation and management of the Governance budget
  • Ensure proper management of electronic and physical files
  • Respond to governance related queries for Membership, Chief and Council and external stakeholders
  • Build, develop, and grow any relationships vital to improving the governance capacity for Fort Will First Nation
  • Complete financial reporting requirements
  • Assist Membership Department, as needed, for the sole purpose of status card renewal
  • Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • University degree or college diploma in the field of Indigenous Studies, Political Science, Legal Studies or Community Development, or five (5) years direct work experience in project management, including all aspects of governance and process development and execution
  • Strong knowledge of legal concepts, principles, and terminology
  • Thorough understanding of statutes, court decisions, ordinances, resolutions, and legal documentation
  • Good understanding of legal references and procedures
  • Strong familiarity with project management and coordination
  • Competent and proficient understanding of First Nations governance, inherent rights and treaties
  • Familiar with current Federal and Provincial Legislation including the Indian Act
  • Technically competent with various software program, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher and Adobe
  • Experience in working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential
  • Flexible during times of change
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks efficiently
  • This position is subject to a criminal records check
