Director of Nitrocellulose Science and Energetics

Location: Onsite - Ottawa
Reports to: COO

Type: Full-time

About Dominion Dynamics

Dominion Dynamics is building Canada's first modern defence prime: software-defined, attritable, and sovereign.

We believe tomorrow's military power won't hinge on exquisite platforms, but on the seamless coordination of adaptable, AI-driven capabilities across every domain. We're building that family of systems, fielded with operators, sovereign by design, and accountable to Canada's democratic values.

We move fast, deploy with the CAF, especially in the Arctic, and operate with uncompromising respect for Canadian law, treaty obligations, and the CAF community.

Our founding team includes former operators from Anduril, Google, Amazon, and the Canadian Armed Forces. We're building hard tech in hard places, and we're looking for system-level thinkers who thrive at the intersection of autonomy, aerospace, and national security.

Why This Role Matters

Nitrocellulose underpins modern defence and security systems, yet Canada's domestic capability to develop and produce it has eroded over time. Rebuilding that capability is critical to national sovereignty, supply-chain resilience, and operational readiness. This role is central to that mission, owning not just the science, but the creation of a durable, Canadian-controlled capability that can move from lab-scale innovation to safe, compliant, and scalable production. You will define how nitrocellulose is developed, qualified, and produced in Canada for decades to come.

The Role: Director of Nitrocellulose Science and Energetics

This is a rare builder–operator role at the intersection of deep science, national security, and industrial scale. As Director of Nitrocellulose Science and Energetics, you will take end-to-end ownership of a strategic material capability, leading the science, building the team, and standing up the processes and infrastructure required to move from R&D to sovereign Canadian production. What makes this role unique is its real-world impact: you're not advancing research in isolation, you're rebuilding a critical defence capability from first principles and seeing it fielded in service of Canada's long-term security and independence.

What You'll Do
  • Lead all nitrocellulose research, formulation, and process development, providing deep subject-matter expertise in nitration chemistry, polymer behavior, stabilization, and performance characterization

  • Define technical requirements, specifications, and qualification pathways for defence and dual-use applications

  • Design and guide experimental programs across laboratory, pilot, and production environments, including testing, data analysis, and validation

  • Build and execute the transition from R&D to pilot and production scale, establishing safe, repeatable, and compliant manufacturing processes

  • Define quality controls, operating procedures, and production readiness criteria for energetic materials

  • Partner with safety, facilities, and engineering teams to design production infrastructure and hazard mitigation strategies

  • Build, lead, and grow the team responsible for ongoing production, quality, and continuous improvement

  • Establish and manage technical partnerships with Canadian and allied manufacturers, research institutions, and suppliers

  • Collaborate with downstream integrators and defence partners to align material properties with system and mission requirements

  • Represent Dominion as the technical authority in collaborative programs, joint development efforts, and government engagements

  • Create, manage, and protect Dominion-owned intellectual property related to nitrocellulose chemistry, processing, and applications

  • Support patent strategy, trade secret development, and technical documentation

  • Contribute to long-term roadmap planning for energetics and advanced materials within Dominion

  • Ensure compliance with Canadian and allied regulatory frameworks governing energetic materials and explosives

  • Engage regulators, defence customers, and government stakeholders as a technical and program lead

    What You'll Bring
  • Advanced degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field (PhD strongly preferred)

  • Significant hands on experience working with nitrocellulose or closely related energetic materials

  • Deep understanding of nitration chemistry, polymer chemistry, and energetic material behavior

  • Experience transitioning materials from R&D into controlled manufacturing environments

  • Proven ability to lead technical teams and complex, safety critical programs

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Eligibility to obtain Canadian security clearances

It Will Be Nice if You Had:
  • Prior experience in defence, aerospace, or national security programs

  • Familiarity with Canadian and allied regulatory environments governing explosives and energetic materials

  • Experience with Natural Resources Canada explosives regulations, ITAR, or equivalent allied frameworks

  • Experience standing up new production lines, pilot plants, or manufacturing capability from first principles

  • Background working with government customers, defence primes, or controlled industrial facilities

Why Join Us

At Dominion Dynamics, we're designing systems that work where others fail, in the most extreme environments on Earth.

At Dominion Dynamics you'll:

  • Shape the future of Canada's sovereign defence.

  • Build real capability in fields with CAF and allies.

  • Move fast, field fast with small teams, high trust, and rapid iteration.

  • Operate with integrity under Canadian law and treaty obligations.

  • Have impact from day one with equity, responsibility, and direct access to leadership.

If you're driven by innovation, adaptability, and the opportunity to make a strategic impact, this is where you belong
