Under the general supervision of the Foreman/Lead Mechanic, the Mechanic performs a variety of duties related to the servicing, repairing, overhauling, rebuilding, testing, inspecting and preventative maintenance on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment. In the course of carrying out daily tasks, the incumbent submits various reports and records, as well as practices and ensures that the safety procedures are followed in the execution of their assigned duties.
As the Mechanic Garage 1st Class, you will:
- Perform preventative maintenance tasks such as oil changes, lubrication, adjustments, etc. on all types of vehicles and equipment.
- Perform diagnosis by testing, operating or inspection and ensure that the problem diagnosed is correct.
- Disassemble, assemble and prepare tasks which includes selection of methods, tools, equipment and materials, and perform necessary repairs on all types of vehicles, equipment and component parts, including tire repairs and balancing.
- Read and interpret drawings, blueprints or schematics to estimate material and time to complete task and also fabricate, inspect material, components and workmanship for defects.
- Test equipment, components and materials of completed repairs to approve or reject and take appropriate action and document test results.
- Operate various types of mechanical, welding, and tire equipment, hand tools, and facility equipment and change tires as may be required.
- Respond to emergent situations, customer services requests and complaints.
- Operate, clean and maintain various types of vehicles/equipment.
- Write and maintain reports and records.
- Assist in training of new employees, by example.
- Maintain equipment yards and buildings as required.
- Maintain cooperative working relations.
- In the course of daily tasks, ensure the practice of established safety rules and regulations for the protection of self, fellow employees, the public (contractors), property and/or equipment operated by being continuously aware of existing and new safety procedures and concerns of the Department and the Fleet Safety Committee.
- Perform related duties consistent with the classification including the proper operation, cleaning and maintenance of any assigned vehicle, the perusal of the City for unsafe conditions in the course of carrying out the daily activities, reporting/rectifying irregularities, retrieving misplaced materials (such as signs, lumber, barricades, etc.), works overtime, various shifts and in various repair facilities as required.
- Perform other duties consistent with the classification as assigned, including junior classifications.
Your education and qualifications include:
Approximately five (5) years of current and directly related experience repairing heavy duty equipment, or truck transport equipment complimented with a Manitoba Vehicle Inspection Certificate.
Experience performing preventative maintenance, diagnosis, inspection, overhaul, repair, rebuild, modification, installation and testing of heavy duty/truck transport equipment.
A valid Manitoba Vehicle Inspection Certificate is preferred.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision or direction.
Effective communication skills with the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
Excellent customer service skills with the ability to interact and provide effective service to staff members, members of other City Departments and the public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and work in a team setting.
Experience in basic Arc and Acetylene welding is preferred.
Experience in vehicles and equipment air conditioning along with valid MOPIA certification.
Knowledge of safety procedures for mechanic shops; with the ability to learn the department specific safety programs, and Workplace Health and Safety regulations.
Proficiency at sourcing and retrieving maintenance information electronically and online.
IMPORTANT: Applicants who have been educated outside of Canada must have education which is comparable to the minimum qualification in Canada. Applicants submitting foreign credentials require an official academic assessment report issued by a recognized Canadian assessment service at application.
Conditions of employment:
- The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- Must have Red Seal Certification (Interprovincial Status) as a Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician, or as a Truck and Transport Mechanic.
- Must have a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's License, with the ability to obtain Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement within 6 months.
- Physically capable of performing the duties of this position, including but not limited to: considerable standing, bending, crawling, lifting, climbing, pulling and reaching, and heavy lifting up to 100lbs.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, various locations and overtime during peak periods, as required.
- Must provide own hand tools consistent with trade requirements.
