We are driven to do more. More for our customers and the financial professionals who offer our products. If you are driven to do more and love the challenge of pursuing more, Athene is your kind of company. You will find we offer more than the basics to create an inclusive and dynamic work environment at our various locations.

Purpose:
The Director of Liability Risk will serve as a senior technical leader and key contributor within the Risk organization, supporting the oversight of liability risks across Athene's businesses. In this role, the Director will collaborate closely with finance, actuarial, and cross-functional partners to evaluate insurance products, assess transaction risks, and strengthen the firm's liability risk governance frameworks. This position plays a critical role in delivering second-line challenge for product development, assumption approval, and liability-related risk assessments while ensuring clear, actionable insights are provided to senior leadership and oversight committees. The Director will operate with a high degree of independence as a subject matter expert and will significantly contribute to governance routines, model and assumption review, and risk reporting.

Accountabilities:

  • Support risk oversight of liability risks, including product design, assumption setting, ALM, liquidity, collateral, and reinsurance structuring.
  • Conduct second-line challenge on new product designs and reinsurance deals, collaborating closely with pricing and actuarial partners.
  • Develop and maintain an insurance product pipeline summary to ensure transparency regarding upcoming product and deal activity and associated governance requirements.
  • Prepare liability risk assessments and supporting materials for new product and deal reviews, including documentation used for regulatory applications.
  • Support the governance framework for product and assumption approvals, ensuring effective second-line review and challenge processes are consistently applied.
  • Provide content, analysis, and recommendations to support the Liability Risk & Product Approval Committee.
  • Partner with actuarial and finance teams to review liability risk reporting between committee meetings and ensure material items are identified and escalated.
  • Support the Assumption Oversight Committee by providing subject matter expertise, assisting in agenda preparation, and reviewing assumption-related material issues.
  • Represent Risk on applicable actuarial review working groups (ARWGs), contributing actuarial insight to support recommendations for AOC review.
  • Strengthen documentation, processes, controls, and risk governance related to liability risk across product lines and markets.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support audit, regulatory, and governance expectations related to liability risk.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and technical leadership to junior actuarial and risk team members.

Qualifications and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in mathematics, actuarial science, finance, or a related quantitative field.

  • Associate or Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (ASA required; FSA preferred), or equivalent international actuarial designation.
  • 8+ years of actuarial or risk experience in life insurance or reinsurance, with exposure to spread-based products such as annuities or pension risk transfer.
  • Experience with actuarial modeling software and understanding of pricing, valuation, ALM, or risk modeling concepts.
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory, accounting, capital, and financial reporting frameworks relevant to liability risks.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate actuarial assumptions, methodologies, and models used for liability projections and product pricing.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to senior leaders and committee members.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively with cross-functional partners.
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring ability, and strong business judgement.
  • Proficiency with MS Office; experience with programming or data tools is advantageous.
