The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Summer Student to join the talented team at the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS). As a Student, Quaternary Geology, you will provide both field and office support for the Southern Alberta Groundwater Evaluation (SAGE) project. In this project, the AGS is collaborating with the Government of Alberta to conduct hydrogeological characterization, geological mapping and modeling of Neogene–Quaternary sediments and Cretaceous bedrock, and regional electromagnetic geophysical surveys to improve understanding of groundwater availability and connected surface water resources.

You will have the opportunity to work alongside a team of highly motivated and experienced geologists and earth scientists, contributing to innovative solutions that advance geoscience knowledge. This role offers valuable networking opportunities, mentorship, and the chance to make a meaningful contribution to an important groundwater resources project. We promote a strong work–life balance, a team-oriented culture, and a commitment to safety and personal development.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Provide field assistance to AGS geologists conducting surficial geology and landscape mapping.
  • Perform geomorphic interpretations using a range of imagery resources and field data to develop surficial geology maps for regions of Alberta in a GIS environment.
  • Assist AGS staff with updating and verifying Quaternary databases as part of the ongoing review of legacy data.
  • Assist in collecting data used for subsurface and hydrogeological characterization of Alberta geology.
  • Compile, organize, and manage select groundwater data from various sources to support AGS staff.

What we're looking for in you:

  • Currently enrolled in the second year or higher of a Bachelor's degree program in Earth Science, Geology, or a related field.
  • Proficient in GIS software, with solid computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Completion of an introductory hydrogeology course is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Self-motivated with the capacity to work independently and manage tasks with minimal supervision.

Additional Information:

  • Proof of enrollment in a registered post-secondary institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.
  • Please include a cover letter as part of your application.
  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
  • A Pre-placement Medical and a fully valid Class 5 driver's license, along with a positive driving record, are required due to the field component of this role.
  • Training will be provided as needed (e.g., First Aid). The role includes fieldwork and travel for site visits and team-building activities.
  • Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
  • If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.

What we offer you:

  • Flexible Work Program - hybrid work and flexible hours.
  • Edmonton: Hybrid work - employees will work in office two days per week.
