The Founders Lab supports programming for innovation and entrepreneurship, including the Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) and the Scale Up Program.
The Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) is a unique non-profit program for massively scalable seed stage science-based technology startups. CDL provides milestone-based coaching to early-stage companies over the course of 9 months with the goal of maximizing the commercialization of hugely impactful scientific or deeply technical breakthroughs and technology cluster development in the region.
The Scale Up Program supports local ventures by matching them with a collective of seasoned entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and C-level executives. Simultaneously, the program trains global innovation leaders, in corporate and government, through conferences, UBC Sauder Professional Education certification in corporate innovation leadership, and a mentorship AI co-pilot for all program participants. The program is a three-sided marketplace for scale-up founders, mentors, and innovation leaders across the UBC and BC ecosystem.
The Senior Project Manager helps the office to reach its ambitious goals in creating significant impact to the innovation ecosystem on the west coast and leads the strategy, development and management of a large portfolio of projects to enhance and strengthen the Founders Lab brand image, community contribution, stakeholder relationships, and mission.
Organizational Status
The Senior Project Manager reports to the Director, Founders Lab. They work closely with Associate Directors of both CDL and Scale Up Programs as well as stakeholders in the global CDL community.
Work Performed
Develops short- and long-term strategies to support the brand image, community engagement, reputation, and societal impact of the Founders Lab, UBC Sauder, and the university.
Provides leadership in managing, modifying and maintaining Founders Lab programs.
Manages a team of project coordinators and project managers and is responsible for hiring, discipline, evaluation and termination.
Proactively and concurrently leads a number of projects of considerable size, diversity, complexity, and risk and assumes responsibility for their successful completion; resolves any issues and solves problems throughout project life cycle.
Responsible for planning, leading, and allocating project resources; balances workload and workflow of multiple projects, ensuring that timelines are adhered to for each, and the standard operating procedures (SOPs) are being created, implemented and executed across multiple functions to ensure operational efficiency and productivity.
Responsible for the strategic conceptualization of projects and is responsible for the implementation and management of the project progress including establishing project timelines, milestones and deliverables, liaises as necessary, and ensures timelines are met.
Provides expertise in initiating, building, and maintaining complex relationships with external community members, senior government officials, key stakeholders, highly pedigreed investors, potential and existing partners/donors, and other university contacts. Interacts directly with CEOs and senior representatives of corporate sponsors and government agencies, along with hundreds of scientific founders of ventures.
Responsible for the management of defined portfolio budget(s), forecasting future expenses for operating budgets and accounts; builds financial reports and forecasts for use in partnership reporting and strategic and forward planning.
Reviews and negotiates service contracts (with technology providers, legal teams, suppliers, government officials, funders, etc.) for the execution of Founders Lab activities; develops relationships with suppliers on and off campus.
Performs other duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Founders Lab is a high priority and high-profile initiative for the UBC Sauder School of Business and UBC. Program outcomes can be expected to have a significant impact on UBC Sauder's and UBC's public profile. Lack of professionalism and poor decision-making could lead to loss of support and fundamental damage to the reputation of the UBC Sauder and UBC.

Manages a team and is responsible for hiring, discipline, evaluation and termination.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Project management certification is preferred.
- Ability to lead, design, and supervise strategic and complex projects.
- Strong negotiation, communication, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills with a wide variety of individuals and circumstances, including an ability to build consensus and bridge gaps between parties with differing objectives.
- Experience in managing complex budget and funding structure.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize, coordinate, and execute multiple, concurrent complex projects and initiatives while working under tight time constraints in a dynamic environment with exacting deadlines.
