Overview

Avenue MD Surgical Inc., a private plastic surgery clinic in Yorkville, is seeking a part-time Surgical Assistant. This role is focused on intraoperative support, directly assisting the surgeon and maintaining sterile technique throughout procedures. The ideal candidate has operating room training and experience as a scrub nurse or surgical assistant, with the ability to adapt to the specialized needs of plastic surgery.

Duties

  • Prepare operating rooms by ensuring all sterile equipment and supplies are ready for surgical procedures
  • Assist surgeons during operations by maintaining a sterile field and passing instruments efficiently
  • Monitor patient vital signs and assess patient status throughout surgical procedures
  • Administer medications as directed, including injections and IV infusions, adhering to strict aseptic techniques
  • Document all surgical activities accurately in medical records using EMR/EHR systems such as Epic or Cerner
  • Support preoperative and postoperative patient care including assessments, discharge planning, and patient education
  • Maintain strict infection control standards and adhere to HIPAA regulations to protect patient confidentiality
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including anesthesiologists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals
  • Assist with specialized procedures such as catheterization, tube feeding management, or neurodiagnostic evaluations when required
  • Participate in training sessions on new surgical techniques or equipment to ensure continuous professional development

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), or Surgical Assistant with current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is a plus
  • Proven experience as a scrub nurse in an accredited surgical setting
  • Extensive knowledge of aseptic technique, sterile processing, and infection control protocols
  • Ability to work effectively in high-pressure environments requiring critical thinking and rapid decision-making
  • Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and diagnostic evaluation methods
  • Excellent communication skills for patient assessment and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Ability to maintain composure during emergency situations such as acute pain management or airway management scenarios

Part-time schedule: approximately 150 surgical days per year. Shifts typically start at 6:30 a.m. and finish between 4:00–7:00 p.m., depending on the surgical schedule.
