What will you do as a Lead Mechanical (Automation) Engineer?LMI Technologies is seeking a hands-on technical leader to spearhead the Design, Development, Automation and Validation of our next generation of high-accuracy industrial measurement and inspection systems. Working as part of our global Technology (R&D) team, you will report to the Senior Product Engineering Manager and work at our Burnaby head office.
You will lead a team to design complex automation, starting from ideation, component sourcing, design, prototyping and production rollout.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Design & Development: Directly manage and contribute to the mechanical design lifecycle of complex, high-precision machinery, ensuring designs meet stringent accuracy, speed, and reliability targets.
- Precision Architecture: Take ownership of critical mechanical subsystems, including the specification, design, and validation of linear motion systems, high-stiffness structures, kinematic mounts, Robot arms and custom stages.
- Validation & Metrology: Define and execute the rigorous validation plan for system performance, focusing on precision metrology techniques to prove compliance with nanometer/micron-level specifications.
- Leadership: Mentor and manage a team of engineers, driving projects through concept, detailed design (CAD/FEA), prototyping, testing, and industrial deployment.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Operations/Production, Electrical and Software teams to ensure seamless hardware/software integration, but maintain ultimate accountability for the mechanical system performance.
The ideal candidate has spent a significant portion of their career contributing directly to the design and development of automated systems.
- Engineering Foundation: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering is required.
- Leadership Track Record: Experience leading technical projects or small engineering teams from concept definition through to successful industrialization.
- Hands-On Hardware Expertise: Deep, demonstrable experience in the design and development of precision positioning equipment such as CMMs, high-resolution 3D Printers, advanced robotics end-effectors, or similar tools.
- Metrology Focus: Direct experience designing or implementing precision measurement and calibration methodologies to verify machine performance.
- Core Technical Skills: Proven proficiency in Kinematic Design, Dynamic Analysis, Tolerance Stacking/GD&T, and material selection for high-accuracy applications.
Salary Range: $97,600 - $139,000
