The Grader Operator - Utility Operator 1 position encompasses a wide variety of skilled heavy equipment duties in various locations indoors and outdoors in various working conditions. By working safely and cooperatively with others you will contribute to meeting the operational objectives of the business unit and HRM.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate a CAT 140M wheeled road grader.
  • Operates heavy equipment (such as but not limited to the following; Tandem, Loader, Backhoe, Street Sweeper,10 ton Roller, Tag Trailer)
  • Load and unload equipment and materials;
  • Maintain and safely operate assigned tools/equipment;
  • Work safely and cooperatively assisting other classifications;
  • Contribute to meeting the operational objectives of the business unit and HRM;
  • Participate in Winter Works, as required, including shift work if necessary.
  • Must be willing to accept occupational related training and achieve proficiency in operation of snow and ice equipment;
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Three (3) years related work experience.
  • Must have a valid Nova Scotia Driver's License Class 3 with Air Brake endorsement;

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Must be trained with 3 years experienced in operating CAT 140M wheeled road grader or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of methods, material and equipment usage involved in Road Operations and Construction;
  • Experience in shoulder finishing and grade reestablishment.
  • Experience grading gravel roads, establishing crown, material management.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills;
  • Must have a good attendance and work record;
  • Capable and willing to work inside and outside in varying weather conditions;
  • Ability to work independently, and as a team player;
  • Ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively with members of your team, traffic control and signage and/or members of the public.
  • WHMIS, CPR/First Aid certification, Provincial Traffic Control Certification and Signage Course or ability to successfully complete.
  • Candidates must be able to provide a clear Criminal Records Check.

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.

WORK STATUS: Permanent, full-time

HOURS OF WORK: Monday – Friday, 7:00 am - 3:00 pm are the regular hours for this position. Candidates must be capable of engaging in shift work for the Winter Works program.

SALARY: $29.35 per hour, as per the CUPE 108 Collective Agreement
