The Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics (KCNI) at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to analyze large amounts of multi-modal brain and mental health data. Our goal is to accelerate our understanding of mental illness and addictions, and to advance diagnosis, management and therapeutic interventions. Our research is conducted in an open science and collaborative environment, with a strong emphasis on patient-centered and comprehensive care.
The "Brain Health Data Challenge (BHDC) Platform" aims to transform brain research by supporting the development of AI prediction models for numerous brain diseases. This will be achieved by organizing AI challenges using Canadian datasets spanning the entire lifespan. The BHDC platform promotes reproducible, equitable and open AI model frameworks.
The KCNI team is seeking a full-time, contract (12 months) Research Analyst with strong experience with AI/ML research, and handling and analyzing of mental health and brain health data. The Research Analyst will contribute to the development of data science competitions related to mental illness and addictions. Working under the guidance of the KCNI Principal Investigator and selected co-Investigators, they will support tasks involved in the initiation and preparation of AI challenges, including ethical and research governance activities, data exploration, data preparation, and visualization to inform project decision-making, with the possibility of contributing to AI model development. This role requires a high degree of collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams.
Key Accountabilities
Research Ethics
and Regulatory Support:
- Drafting and organizing materials for research ethics board (REB) submissions for mental health and brain health data challenges and ensuring submissions meet institutional guidelines and data governance policies for public, controlled access, or commercial datasets.
Data Cleaning, Preparation And Documentation
- Perform data visualization and analysis to inform project planning and decision-making
Support the challenge team in preparing datasets and data models for challenges, including:
Integrating and applying ML and AI tools to support efficient data retrieval, preparation and analysis.
- Contributing to the development of ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes to transform raw data into a usable format.
- Cleaning and preprocessing raw data to ensure accuracy, consistency and reliability.
- Handling missing values, outliers and inconsistencies in the data.
- Organizing datasets, defining training and testing splits.
- Developing and testing baseline AI solutions.
Supporting the development and maintenance of data processing workflows and pipelines to enable efficient analysis and modeling.
Prepare and maintain documentation, including data sheets, data dictionaries, and descriptions of data pipelines and workflows to enhance data literacy among users.
- Support reproducible research practices by maintaining organized code, documentation and version control, where appropriate.
- Handle data in accordance with Canadian Privacy laws and healthcare data sharing practices to prevent patient identification and data leakage.

- Offer input and insights related to AI model development including fairness and equity considerations during challenge design and preparation.
- Support the involvement of patients and individuals with lived experience throughout the challenge lifecycle.
- Perform cross-functional or other duties as assigned and/or requested.

Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Biomedical or Computer Engineering, Bioinformatics, Neuroscience, Psychology, or a related field.
- One or more years of experience in research protocols, data analysis and/or AI/ML workflows, preferably involving mental health-related data.
- Understanding of research ethics protocols and ability to prepare and submit REB applications (i.e., drafting sections, liaising with internal REB, coordinating documentation in a timely manner).
- Demonstrated experience working with mental health data types (i.e., time-series data), including data analysis and related technologies.
- Strong experience with AI/ML research, including familiarity with frameworks and methodologies.
Familiarity with a range of data technologies, which may include but are not limited to several of the following:
Database management systems, and querying languages (e.g., SQL).
- Understanding of ETL processes and tools for transforming data into a usable format.
- Programming languages such as Python (e.g.,Pandas, SciPy and/or NumPy).
- Data visualization libraries such as Matplotlib and/or Plotly.
Linux environment, including bash scripting and version control systems (e.g., Git).
Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address technical and conceptual data challenges.
- Well-developed organizational skills and the ability to meet project deadlines and requirements with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
