Role Overview
The Assistant Controller provides detail-oriented and analytical support to the Controller and finance team within a fast-paced construction environment. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing timely reports, and supporting budgeting, cost tracking, and project accounting activities. The ideal candidate will bring strong financial acumen and a proactive approach to supporting day-to-day finance operations and continuous improvement initiatives.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Complete the monthly, quarterly and annual close process and reporting (including consolidated financial statements) within the established timeline
- Analyze and interpret the financial results compared to budgets and forecasts, in collaboration with other departments
- Support month-end internal and external financial reporting, as well as ad-hoc financial analysis
- Assist with the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors, providing necessary documentation
- Ensure compliance with accounting principles, regulations, and internal controls
- Assist with the development and management of financial controls in accordance with the Company's procedures
- Support the budgeting process by gathering financial data and collaborating with department heads to create comprehensive budget forecasts
- Monitor financial performance against budgets and report variances to senior management with actionable insights
- Assist with working capital management and cash flow forecasting
- Responsible for completing statutory and Company specific filings within established deadlines, including HST returns, payroll filings and bank reporting
- Assist with creating, maintaining, and administering Company policies and identifying potential areas for process improvement
- Mentor finance and accounting team members, fostering professional development and addressing any operational inefficiencies
- Support and cross-train to Finance department processes
- Performs other duties as required
Performance Expectations include:
- Maintain effective relationships with colleagues, project personnel, suppliers, subcontractors and customer representatives
- Coordinate with Senior Management to ensure project issues are dealt with in a timely manner
- Constant attention to accuracy and detail is essential
- Remain fully familiar with MML's Human Resources Policies and MML's Health & Safety Policies & Procedures
- Prioritize Health and Safety in all areas of business
- Actively works to streamline work processes to remove inefficiencies
- Support Company ISO Quality Control efforts, and auditing as required
- Demonstrate a commitment to all accountabilities of the position, working towards the achievement of the Company goals and objectives
What We're Looking For:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance; CPA designation preferred (or working towards completion)
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in full-cycle accounting or a similar finance role, preferably within the construction or mechanical contracting industry
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, practices, and financial regulations
- Proven experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate complex financial information effectively
- High attention to detail
- Ability to manage competing priorities and adapt to changing demands while meeting tight deadlines
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently, take initiative, and drive tasks to completion
- Effective leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented environment
- Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel
