At Scribd Inc. (pronounced "scribbed"), our mission is to spark human curiosity. Join our team as we create a world of stories and knowledge, democratize the exchange of ideas and information, and empower collective expertise through our four products: Everand, Scribd, Slideshare, and Fable.
This posting reflects an approved, open position within the organization.
We support a culture where our employees can be real and be bold; where we debate and commit as we embrace plot twists; and where every employee is empowered to take action as we prioritize the customer.
When it comes to workplace structure, we believe in balancing individual flexibility and community connections. It's through our flexible work benefit, Scribd Flex, that employees – in partnership with their manager – can choose the daily work-style that best suits their individual needs. A key tenet of Scribd Flex is our prioritization of intentional in-person moments to build collaboration, culture, and connection. For this reason, occasional in-person attendance is required for all Scribd Inc. employees, regardless of their location.
So what are we looking for in new team members? Well, we hire for "GRIT". The textbook definition of GRIT is demonstrating the intersection of passion and perseverance towards long term goals. At Scribd Inc., we are inspired by the potential that this can unlock, and ask each of our employees to pursue a GRIT-ty approach to their work. In a tactical sense, GRIT is also a handy acronym that outlines the standards we hold ourselves and each other to. Here's what that means for you: we're looking for someone who showcases the ability to set and achieve Goals, achieve Results within their job responsibilities, contribute Innovative ideas and solutions, and positively influence the broader Team through collaboration and attitude.
As a Senior Android Engineer on the Fable team, you'll help shape the future of reading, working on Fable, a successful app that helps people build a reading habit, find their next book, and connect with other readers. Fable is a top 5 app in the Books category of the App Store with a growing, vibrant community.
You'll play a lead role in developing Fable for Android, planning and developing features across all parts of the app. As Fable's lead Android engineer, you'll drive the architectural roadmap, planning and executing on performance and stability enhancements.
We value ownership of the product from end to end, bringing creativity and energy to building great experiences for the Fable community, and delighting our users with both aesthetics and utility. We are looking for engineers who share these values.
We believe the best mobile experiences come from teams who care deeply about the people they build for, and each other.
About the Role…
Your main focus will be to design and build high-quality Android experiences.
Collaborate with product, design, QE, and engineers to deliver features that are performant, intuitive, and visually polished.
Strengthen the app's architecture and performance.
Contribute to technical direction, helping evolve Fable's Android foundations and development best practices.
Partner with other engineers to improve code quality, test coverage, and release reliability.
Participate in code reviews, mentorship, and design discussions to help the team grow and move cohesively.
Champion a user-first mindset, grounding technical decisions in how they enhance the experience.
We're excited about you because…
You bring significant experience in Android development with a strong track record of building and shipping high-quality consumer apps at scale.
You write clean, maintainable Kotlin code and have deep experience with Jetpack Compose, Coroutines/Flows, and modern Android architecture patterns such as MVVM or MVI.
You have a keen eye for usability, accessibility, and performance, and care about the craft of building intuitive, beautiful interfaces.
You thrive in cross-functional collaboration, communicating early and often with product, design, and QA partners to align on goals and tradeoffs.
You take ownership from concept to release and value long-term thinking over short-term fixes.
You enjoy mentoring, knowledge-sharing, and helping the team move as a cohesive unit.
You care deeply about the users; understanding what makes Fable impactful in their daily lives and translating that empathy into the features you build.
You're keen to apply AI coding tools to increase development velocity, and automate various parts of the software development process.
It's a plus if you also have -
Experience improving app reliability, load performance, or crash metrics in large-scale Android apps.
Exposure to Firebase or similar authentication frameworks, and subscription-oriented flows.
Proficiency applying agentic / AI coding tools to Android development is a big plus.
