The Opportunity

Have you ever pictured yourself as an investigator or environmental detective? Maybe you have wanted to know more about what happens after the triage or want to hone your evidence gathering skills. The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking an Investigator to join the Major Investigations team for a 12 month period. At the AER, our investigators are responsible for investigating breaches of energy and environmental legislation to uphold the enforcement backstop. This team is responsible for telling the full story to allow for fair and unbiased decision making.

Working in this dynamic field requires well-developed problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically. The successful candidate must be able to adapt to change quickly and assess for new challenges and opportunities. This limited term opportunity is guaranteed to allow you the chance to complete at least one investigation from triage to enforcement decision. What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Triage what to investigate by reviewing inspection and audit findings to determine if an investigation is warranted.
  • Develop investigation plans that guide you and your team members through the process to ensure a successful outcome.
  • Gather evidence though information requests, witness interviews, photography, securing physical evidence, researching historical records, and utilizing information technology.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills to analyze vast amounts of information and data to discover potential leads, substantiate theories and ultimately prove your case.
  • Write investigation reports that evaluate and summarise the evidence to enable unbiased and impartial enforcement decisions.
  • Be the subject matter expert to provide guidance and advice to AER staff on matters concerning the investigation processes, techniques and the collection and preservation of evidence.

What we're looking for in you:

  • A bachelor's degree in the field of science, resource management or law enforcement and a minimum of 5 years of progressive experience relating to regulatory compliance and enforcement. Investigation experience is an asset.
  • Ability to compile and analyze technical details and apply critical thinking skills to overcome obstacles and challenges that are presented during an investigation.
  • A team player who is effective at collaborating with others and is willing to proactively seek advice and respectfully provide their opinion.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and writing, to document and present investigation findings.

Additional Information:

  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.

  • Pre-placement medical and a fully valid class 5 driver's license along with a positive driving record is required.

  • This position will be subject to pre-employment background screening, including a criminal record check.
  • Additional training is required and will be provided: First Aid, H2S Alive, Driver Training.

  • Occasional overnight travel to different AER office and field locations in Alberta.

  • This role will be approximately 90% office work and 10% field work.
