Job Summary
The primary focus of the Research Projects Manager is to carry out the co-ordination, communication, and management of research budgets and activities for the research program of Dr Jessica Liauw and Dr. Jennifer Hutcheon. Exceptional organizational skills, as well as a high degree of motivation, enthusiasm, and initiative are required to provide central coordination and management of multiple studies and a growing program of research related to high risk pregnancy and the reproductive health needs of marginalized people.
Responsibilities will include central study management for multiple local and national studies. The Research Projects Manager will build and foster effective working relationships with research partners, oversee ethics applications, determine project plans and timelines, develop study documentation, and collaborate on `subject recruitment and data collection for ongoing studies.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Principal Investigators. Works with the Principal Investigators, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research Program Manager, and other members of the Liauw and Hutcheon lab including another Liauw and Hutcheon Lab Research Manager. Also works with co-investigators and research staff involved with the conduct of projects at local, national and international collaborating research centres as required. External contacts are also required with the University Industry Liaison Office (UILO).
Work Performed
Works collaboratively with other managers to conduct the central management of study activities for the Liauw and Hutcheon Research Lab
Facilitates and oversees study logistics and protocols by consulting with Principal Investigators to project study needs
Develops strategic work plans and sets priorities to maximize research capabilities within available resources. Identifies human resource, research space and equipment needs for the study and resolves as appropriate.
Develops frameworks for study staff onboarding, data acquisition, and data linkage within the Liauw and Hutcheon research program.
Develops research project budgets and assists with the negotiation of terms of agreement and budgets with PI's and research collaborators.
Monitors project budgets within the context of granting agency guidelines, operational demands and resource constraints and monitors and adheres to allocated budgets.
Collaborates with PI's to source future funds and in writing grant applications.
Assists with the training and management of all levels of personnel and trainees (fellows, residents, graduate and undergraduate students) within the parameters of the research program as necessary.
Completes performance reviews and facilitates individual goal setting and development sessions for junior staff as required.
Assists the PIs in the recruitment of staff by performing duties such as writing summer student proposals, recruiting, participating in interviews, short listing candidates, performing reference checks and providing input into hiring decisions.
Establishes and maintains relationships with other research institutions and universities and facilitates study sub-site agreements with the assistance of the UBC University-Industry Liaison office as required
Liaises with BC Women's and UBC Ethics Committees to determine status of the concurrent ethics approvals and assists investigators in resolving related issues as needed.
Develops and updates study case report forms and associated working protocols for on-going studies; communicates and collaborates with PIs and BCCHR/WHRI data teams to support study data collection
Oversees study recruitment, and patient enrollments for on-going studies within the Liauw and Hutcheon lab and maintains up-to-date records of study progress
Communicates and collaborates with statistical support staff in performance of statistical analyses of data as required; Reviews data results and provides recommendations to principal investigator
Prepares abstracts, posters and presentations for local, national and international medical/scientific meetings and conferences
Plans, organizes and implements study meetings & teleconferences
Collaborates on the dissemination of study progress and findings using various communication platforms.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Research Projects Manager will exercise professional judgment and initiative in the overall coordination and management of research projects, and will be accountable for the effective execution of all research related activities. He/she is required to conduct all research activities in an ethical manner, suited to proper activities of the University of BC, the granting agencies, and to the professional organizations governing him/herself and those governing the activities of all other investigators. Any procedures or data recorded as part of a study or trial must follow Good Clinical Practice guidelines, be reliable and accurate, reflecting the work performed. Strict confidentiality of all study participants must be adhered to. Failure to do so can lead to delays in scientific results of projects and questionable integrity for the project. All activities involving participants are accountable to the Principal Investigator, the Department Head and the Project Manager's governing professional organization.
Supervision Received
The Research Project Manager will work with considerable latitude, with most of the work being done independently; however, the Principal Investigators supervises all projects and will review work regularly.
Supervision Given
The Research Projects Manager will be responsible for the supervision of junior research staff, residents, and students participating in the student work program.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
University degree (Masters preferred) in Health Sciences plus related experience in clinical research and project management (or the equivalent combination of education and experience) preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
Exceptional interpersonal, communication, management and organizational skills
Strong knowledge of the scientific terminology in the health sector
Strong problem-solving abilities, and dedication to accuracy and attention to detail
Working knowledge and experience in project management
Ability to train and supervise other research assistants, staff and students
Ability to multitask and prioritize work to meet deadlines
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and in a cooperative manner with a wide range of internal and external contacts
