Archaeological Field Director

Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and licensed Archaeological Field Director to lead Stage 2-4 fieldwork in Northern Ontario. This role requires a strong background in archaeological survey and excavation, proven leadership in the field, and a commitment to high standards of documentation and compliance. The ideal candidate is organized, adaptable, and passionate about contributing to meaningful archaeological work. This position is for an existing vacancy intended to be filled for the upcoming 2026 field season.
Duties
- Lead and oversee Stage 2-4 survey and excavation in compliance with provincial standards and company protocols.
- Supervise field staff and ensure data collection and documentation are accurate and thorough.
- Maintain detailed field notes, mapping, and daily reporting; ensure all records are submitted in a timely manner.
- Coordinate logistics and equipment use with equipment managers, ensuring safety protocols are followed at all times.
- Communicate effectively with Project Archaeologists and team members on progress, challenges, and site conditions.
- Work up to 6 days per week (approximately 54 hours), weather permitting.
Qualifications
- Must have an Ontario Applied Research or Professional license to conduct archaeological fieldwork.
- A rounded experience leading archaeological field projects from Stage 2-4 is preferred.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills, with the ability to manage teams in remote field settings.
- Minimum of Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Familiarity and comfort with wilderness environments considered an asset.
- Willingness to stay at a remote work camp for the duration of field shifts.
