Chief Engineer – Scallop Freezer Trawler

Position Overview
The Chief Engineer is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of all mechanical, electrical, and auxiliary systems onboard a scallop freezer trawler. Reporting to the Captain, the Chief Engineer has overall responsibility for the engine department, including engine room operations, watchkeeping arrangements, maintenance planning, and supervision of engineering personnel. This role is critical to vessel safety, fishing efficiency, and regulatory compliance during fishing operations and transit.
Key Responsibilities
Hold overall responsibility for the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of the main engine, auxiliary engines, generators, pumps, hydraulic systems, refrigeration/freezer systems, winches, and all auxiliary machinery
Establish and oversee engine room watchkeeping arrangements, ensuring safe operation at all times
Stand engine room watches as required by vessel operations and manning levels
Plan, schedule, and supervise preventative and corrective maintenance programs
Supervise, train, and direct the Second Engineer and other engine room personnel
Diagnose and coordinate repairs to mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and refrigeration systems
Ensure deck machinery, fishing gear support systems, factory equipment, and vessel systems are properly maintained and operational
Maintain engine room logs, maintenance records, and documentation required for inspections and audits
Ensure compliance with Transport Canada regulations, safety management systems, and environmental requirements
Coordinate with shore-based personnel to order parts, spares, tools, and consumables, ensuring adequate inventory is maintained onboard
Manage engine room inventory, spare parts, and maintenance supplies
Respond to machinery failures and emergencies during fishing operations and transit
Participate in safety drills and contribute to onboard safety, environmental, and operational planning
Qualifications & Requirements
Valid Third Class Engineer – Motor-Driven Fishing Vessel certificate
Valid Marine Medical Certificate
Demonstrated experience as Chief Engineer or Senior Engineer on fishing vessels, preferably freezer trawlers or scallop vessels
Strong knowledge of diesel propulsion systems, hydraulic systems, refrigeration/freezing equipment, and auxiliary machinery
Proven ability to manage engine room operations, maintenance planning, and personnel
Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
Ability to work in a physically demanding marine environment and in all weather conditions
Working Conditions
Trip-based or rotational schedule
Extended periods at sea with long working hours during active fishing
Work performed in the engine room, on deck, in factory areas, and throughout the vessel
Reporting Structure
Reports directly to the Captain
Has direct supervisory responsibility over the Second Engineer and engine room personnel
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: $140,000.00-$180,000.00 per year
