Position Overview

This assignment will provide opportunities for engagement with engineers, managers, and others in different departments within the organization, and provide an understanding of some of the workings within the operating and engineering groups at FortisBC.

The co-op student may have the opportunity to gain experience with the following electrical apparatuses: Power transformer, load tap-changers, ground grids, medium and high voltage circuit breakers, voltage regulators, outdoor isolating switches, equipment monitoring systems, and auxiliary substation power systems.

Maintenance planning and reliability work that the co-op student may be involved with will include (but is not limited to):

  • Substation equipment commissioning
  • Substation equipment maintenance
  • Equipment Auditing
  • Equipment Condition Assessments
  • Field visits and on-site diagnostic testing
In this role, you will:

Under the direction and supervision of a Professional Engineer, the co-op student will learn to:

  • Work in a multi-disciplinary team to ensure efficient and optimal operation, maintenance, and improvement of the utility system. 
  • Develop test procedures for low, medium, and high voltage electrical to diagnosis equipment condition.
  • Perform site visits to assess equipment condition.
  • Analyze equipment reliability and provide recommendations on optimal end-of-life, replacement, or overhaul, recommending investments projects or program.
  • Deliver condition assessments indicating equipment health, probability of failure, and potential risks based on analysis of equipment diagnostic testing.
  • Prepare engineering investigations to troubleshoot equipment performance.
  • Assess equipment performance and investigate equipment health to develop maintenance plans that prevent equipment failure and improve asset reliability. 
  • Prepare asset commissioning plans to support FortisBC Capital Plan and establish performance baselines for new assets.
What it takes:
  • Bachelor of Engineering Student (Electrical or Mechanical).
  • Enrolled in a Co-op program.
  • Valid driver's license.
Other Qualifications
  • Interested in learning about the Electrical Utility Industry.
  • Proven competence in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • General understanding of AutoCAD Drawing Viewer and Revu Bluebeam.
  • Experience or courses in electrical power systems considered an asset.
  • Experience or courses with VBA/C++ programming is be preferred.
  • Competent public speaker and strong written communicator.

  • This is a full-time temporary student co-op opportunity with an 8-month term starting in May 2026 with a possible 4 month extension. 
  • Qualifying successful candidates will be provided a relocation allowance.
