Pet Groomer

Overview

Our groomers are a crucial part of The Modern Paw, building lasting relationships with customers and providing quality care to pets. The pet groomer's primary responsibilities include bathing cats and dogs of various sizes and temperaments, trimming, clipping, or shaving hair/fur, and removing matted hair.

Objectives of this role

• Deliver outstanding customer service to pet owners by executing style requests, communicating clearly and honestly, and bringing a positive attitude to work each day
• Provide exemplary care for pets, being gentle and patient with anxious and difficult animals
• Protect the best interests of our customers and their pets, notifying owners of any concerns
• Help our organization continue to grow by forming fruitful relationships with customers that result in repeat visits

Responsibilities

• Clean and freshen pet hair by bathing, shampooing, conditioning and drying dogs
• Shave, trim, and style pet hair according to the owners' preferences or standard grooming styles
• Maintain overall pet hygiene by clipping or grinding nails, brushing teeth and cleaning ears as per shop standards
• Provide additional grooming-related services as required, such as de-matting hair, flea and tick treatments and anal gland expressions (external only) etc.
• Provide cat grooming services, with the support of a second staff member. These will include deshedding services, spot shaves, lion cuts, nail trims, baths and other standing cat grooming services
• Maintain a clean workspace by sanitizing and cleaning before the arrival of every client and at the end of every workday
• Identify potential health issues in pets, such as ear infections, skin conditions, or tooth decay, and informing pet owners of these observations
• Ensure that all pets are safe during the grooming process. Report any incidents as per company policies
• Advise owners on at-home care tips and best practices for their pets and recommend suitable products to pet owners
• Support appointment bookings and provide service quotes
• Maintain accurate file notes and pet vaccination records as per company policies
• Utilize problem-solving skills when trying to solve difficult situations
• Open and close duties as required
• Light janitorial duties as required
• Marketing support including taking pictures and videos of grooming clients, doing local outreach and posting on social media
• Other related duties as assigned

Required skills and qualifications

• College Diploma or equivalent in pet grooming (preferred, but not mandatory)
• Minimum of 1 year of experience in pet grooming of BOTH dogs and cats
• A strong understanding of animal behaviour and the ability to work comfortably with animals, including those with behavioural challenges
• Able to work in a fast-paced environment and provide services to multiple pets each day
• Ability to stand for at least two hours and lift animals weighing over 50 pounds
• Willingness to learn new skills and techniques, and attend educational sessions to keep up with the latest industry trends
• Ability to work with both dogs and cats of all sizes, ages and behaviours
• Well-developed customer service and communication skills, as well as excellent attention to detail

Conditions

• Location: Work is performed mainly indoors at our retail store. Special events may take place a few times a year, requiring travel to the event location
• Risk of Harm: This is an inherently dangerous profession, and as such, you must handle animals according to safety procedures to reduce the risk of injury
• Dress Code: A tunic or scrub top should be worn while grooming along with closed-toed shoes
• Tools and Supplies: You are required to provide your own scissors, trimmers, brushes and the like. The Modern Paw will provide crates, tubs, tables, dryers and consumables such as soap and cleaning products
• This is a commission-based position with significant earning potential.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $20.00-$24.00 per hour
