Metro Vancouver Regional District, Canada WORKFORCE - Staffing Solutions Full time

Overview

We are seeking Chief Engineers for shift coverage in Vancouver, BC.

Compensation will be paid hourly and out of town per diems will be offered to accommodate workers from out of town as applicable.

Please apply today if you are a 1st Class Power Engineer you will be contacted to discuss availability. Here is more information about the operation.

The steam plant is a First Class Plant and operates 24/7 x 36 days per year.

The plant generates 220 psig saturated steam from 6 boilers with maximum steaming capacities ranging from 80 klbs/hr (3 boilers), 125 klbs/hr (1 boiler), and 190 klbs/hr (2 boilers).

The primary fuel is natural gas. There are 5 diesel fuel oil tanks that sit as a backup, and the boilers are capable of firing diesel fuel if needed. The steam demand follows established cycles with higher demand in early mornings and early evenings, with seasonality of weather altering demand (lower in summer higher in winter).

The steam from the boilers goes through 2 pressure reducing valves which reduce the pressure to 185 psig and 170 psig to supply steam to 200 plus buildings in the core of Vancouver with heating steam. This heating steam is supplied through underground piping.

The Chief Engineer is only responsible for the Steam system up to the PRV's. There is someone else who is responsible for the Steam Distribution system downstream of the PRV's.

There are both main and backup water supplies. There are water softeners which are regenerated when hardness is detected. Water is tested frequently and the regeneration is done with salt brine solution. From the softeners, the water goes to the deaerator for removal of dissolved O2. It is fed with low pressure steam to heat the water to drive out the dissolved gases.

From the Deaerator it is gravity fed to feed water pumps. There are steam turbine drive pumps and electric motor driven pumps. Chemicals are added to the Boilers via small pumps that draw from 4 chemical totes. The chemical treater oversees the pump speeds based on operator testing results of the boiler water which is frequent.

Less than 10% of the condensate is returned to the plant. It is also tested for hardness and if hardness is detected the condensate is dumped and the team is notified to investigate to find the source of the hardness.
