About the Opportunity:
Join the Power Laboratory at UBC, led by Prof. Martin Ordonez, a world-renowned expert in sustainable energy systems. This research program focuses on advancing firmware architectures for next-generation power converters, including renewable energy integration, energy storage, and sustainable infrastructure.
We are seeking a highly motivated firmware engineer to pursue a Master of Applied Science (MASc) or PhD degree at UBC, contributing to cutting-edge projects in collaboration with a high-tech industry partner. This research project aims to advance the firmware architecture of energy management systems, enabling seamless integration of renewable energy sources, battery storage, and smart grid technologies.
Research Focus Areas:
- Design and implementation of real-time firmware for energy management systems.
- Development of signal processing and control algorithms for renewable energy sources and storage systems.
- Integration of communication protocols (e.g. CAN, CANopen, I2C, etc.) for smart energy systems.
- Optimization of firmware for reliability, efficiency, and scalability.
- Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and validation of energy management solutions.
- Collaboration with cross-disciplinary teams to integrate firmware with hardware and software systems.
Eligibility and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Strong programming skills in C/C++ for embedded systems.
- Knowledge of electrical engineering, computer architectures and signal processing concepts.
- Experience with microcontroller programming for real-time bare-metal applications
- Familiarity with communication protocols (e.g. CAN, CANopen, I2C, etc.) is highly desirable.
- Basic knowledge of renewable energy systems or energy storage technologies is an asset.
- Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research-intensive environment.
