Custodian

The shíshálh Nation is seeking a Custodian for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment within the Community Member Services (CMS) building, including the Primary Care Clinic, exam rooms, and common areas. This position plays a critical role in supporting infection prevention and control by following cleaning protocols aligned with BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) guidelines. As a frontline contributor to the health and safety of staff, patients, and community members, the Custodian ensures that all spaces reflect the Nation's values of respect, care, and community pride. The position reports directly to the Fleet and Building Maintenance Coordinator and works collaboratively with the Health and Social Development departments to support the overall function and wellbeing of the facility.

Note: This is a part-time position with hours from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.

The Candidate:

• Perform daily cleaning and disinfection of all areas within the CMS building, including the Primary Care Clinic, exam rooms, offices, washrooms, and common areas throughout the day.
• Follow cleaning protocols and infection prevention and control (IPC) guidelines in accordance with the Provincial Infection Control Network (PICNet) BC Best Practices for Environmental cleaning for Prevention and Control for Infections in all Healthcare Settings and Programs.
• Restock cleaning and hygiene supplies such as soap, hand sanitizer, paper products, and PPE in designated areas throughout the day.
• Empty garbage and recycling receptacles and ensure waste is properly disposed of.
• Safely operate and maintain cleaning equipment (e.g., floor buffers, vacuums, mops, etc.).
• Properly handle and dispose of biohazardous or contaminated waste according to established health and safety procedures.
• Report maintenance issues, safety hazards, or equipment malfunctions to the Fleet and Building Maintenance Coordinator.
• Assist with setup and cleanup for meetings, events, or special functions held within the facility.
• Secure facility entrances, windows, and storage areas as required during and after cleaning shifts.
• Participate in ongoing training related to workplace safety, IPC protocols, and the safe use of cleaning products.
• Maintain accurate records of cleaning schedules, supply inventory, and completed tasks as required.
• Perform seasonal tasks such as snow removal, salting walkways, and cleaning exterior entrances.
• Demonstrate respect and professionalism when interacting with staff, patients, and visitors.
• Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position and as required.

• Minimum of 1 year of custodial or facilities maintenance experience, preferably in a healthcare or clinical setting.
• Knowledge of healthcare facility standards and cleaning techniques used in maintaining sanitary environments.
• Knowledge of sterilization, disinfection, and antisepsis and understanding what different surfaces require.
• Knowledge of required PPE and practices for working in a clinical setting for safety.
• Knowledge of various cleaning protocols for different surfaces, i.e. environmental surfaces, critical, semi-critical and non-critical instruments and the level of disinfection required.
• Knowledge of blood and body fluid exposure protocol (cleanse, triage, assess the risk).
• High standards of confidentiality and privacy are required. Knowledge of PIPEDA and FOIP is an asset.
• Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Respectful and professional when interacting with staff, community members, and visitors.
• Strong attention to detail and pride in maintaining a clean and safe environment.
• Culturally respectful and sensitive to the traditions and values of the shíshálh Nation.
• Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (or ability to obtain).
• WHMIS certification or willingness to complete upon hire. First Aid certification is considered an asset.
