Reporting to the Manager, Communications, the Communications Coordinator supports the Manager in helping the department manage its communications needs and public image through materials directed at both internal and external audiences. The incumbent is accountable for assisting with the development and delivery of communications and public affairs programming, advice, and services to meet the department's needs. This includes actively supporting the development and design of the department's print materials, social media content, public relations initiatives, events, and key messaging.

Responsibilities

Major responsibilities for the Communications Coordinator include: 

  • Assisting in developing content, in co-ordination with all divisions, for the departmental website and intranet pages and updating them regularly.
  • Assisting in writing and editing news releases.
  • Assisting in the planning and coordinating events such as news conferences, photo opportunities, tours, trade shows and other major events.
  • Assisting in preparing departmental responses to media requests, by working with managers to ensure timely responses on requests.
  • Contributing to the preparation of Cabinet and FMB decision documents by providing support on the public relations component of these important documents.
  • Assisting with the development (in consultation with the Manager and appropriate staff) of the communication strategy to accompany the communication material.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a recognized diploma in Computer Graphic Design, Desktop Publishing, Communications, Photography, Videography, Website Design, Journalism or a related field, along with two (2) years of related experience in one of these disciplines. Experience updating websites and familiarity with Government of Nunavut processes are considered assets.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut's official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
