Are you passionate about aquaculture and eager to contribute to the sustainable management of fish populations? Join our team as a Fish Culture Section Intern and gain hands-on experience in fish culture operations, data analysis, and technical documentation. This is a unique opportunity to work with a dedicated team under the provincial coordination unit, assisting in the implementation of our fish culture program.
About the jobAs the Fish Culture Section Intern, you will:
- work as part of a team by assisting in implementing the fish culture program under the direction of the provincial coordination unit
- compile background information and provide written documentation related to aquaculture practices and technical procedures
- assist with drafting and reviewing technical guidelines, procedures, and policies and developing communication products for staff, partners, and clients
- assist with the design and implementation of fish husbandry and stocking trials, prepare and review spreadsheets for data management, conduct statistical analysis, and write summary reports on data collected
- prepare and deliver technical presentations to staff, partners, and clients
- provide organizational support for meetings and workshops
- assist with hatchery operations and field work as required
Eligibility:
- valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
- proof of eligibility to work in Canada
- have graduated or will graduate from an approved or legally authorized college or university with a diploma or an equivalent degree or postgraduate certificate or diploma within the last four years
- candidates are only eligible to participate in one MNR 12-month placement and must not have participated in the MNR internship program in the past
- not a permanent employee in the Ontario Public Service
- understanding of aquaculture operations, including fish husbandry, egg incubation, spawning, and fish transport
- understanding of fish biology including genetics, nutrition, and health
- oral and written communication skills to prepare and present program materials and reports to a diverse audience, and to prepare scientific and technical reports and presentations
- analytical and information management skills to manage, synthesize and report new information and offer recommendations using statistical software
- knowledge of personal computers and software including email (MS Outlook), word processing (MS Word), spreadsheet (MS Excel), database (MS Access) and presentation (MS PowerPoint)
- knowledge and understanding of R programming language, data management, experimental design, and implementation
- ability to work independently and in a team environment with a wide variety of partners/collaborators as demonstrated by good interpersonal skills
- knowledge of or commitment to learn worker responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act
