Do you have what it takes to be a ministry specialist and principal resource in source emissions testing procedures? If so, then join the Technical Assessment and Standards Development Branch to provide technical expertise and leadership in developing leading edge ministry standards, guidelines, policies, and programs related to source testing and reducing air pollution in Ontario.

About the job

In this role, you will:

  • Evaluate and recommend approval of pre-test plans submitted by industrial companies
  • Plan and witness source testing activities
  • Complete evaluation reports on various companies related to compliance with legislative requirements
  • Provide verbal and written testimony to the courts
  • Provide advice on technical matters
What you bring to the team
Technical Knowledge
  • You have experience applying source assessment methodologies and procedures (e.g. Ontario Source Testing Code, United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) technical methods/procedures).
  • You have experience using air emission sampling and analytical techniques and relevant industrial process operations (e.g. raw materials, equipment), analytical procedures, and related quality assurance/quality control procedures.
  • You have knowledge of Environment Canada's REPORT EC32102 and USEPA instrument-based techniques (e.g., USEPA Method 7E) including hands-on experience in evaluating continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS), conducting and reviewing relative accuracy test audits (RATA), including all required CEMS calibrations as well as other key quality assurance/quality control procedures to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
  • You know how and when to apply analytical procedures and related quality assessment and quality control procedures to quantify sample pollutants.
  • You have knowledge of computer modelling and experience using various computer software applications (e.g. word processing, spreadsheets).
  • You have mathematical skills to perform statistical evaluations.
Analytical, Problem-Solving, and Project Management skills
  • You demonstrate strong analytical and reasoning skills to evaluate and assess air emissions in different pollution scenarios.
  • You are able to react quickly to unexpected field conditions and make recommendations to resolve the issue(s).
  • You are organized and can determine priorities to effectively coordinate and engage in multiple concurrent projects.
Communication and Interpersonal skills
  • You can communicate and present technical information in a clear manner to different audiences,
  • You know how to prepare written materials such as technical reports, correspondence, etc.
  • You know how to interact effectively with ministry staff, clients, and the public,
Environmental Knowledge
  • You understand the Environmental Protection Act (Ont. Reg. 419) and the environmental compliance approval process.
  • You know and have experience with industrial processes and their related air emissions.
  • You have the ability to determine compliance with government legislation, regulations, approvals, and/or orders.
  • You know the judicial process, court procedures and techniques, and rules of evidence.
