Intercultural Support Workers will be an integral support to the district Newcomer a& international Student Welcome Centre team. Reporting to the district's Newcomer & International Student Welcome Centre Coordinator and working as a collaborative team member across teams in the district, they will provide supports to and/or assist students and families directly with integration and settlement. The Intercultural Support Worker will work closely with the Strong Start team in order to ensure Social and Emotional Learning is taught through a trauma-invested lens.

Responsibilitiesinclude,butarenotlimitedto:

  • Assist students and families with school registration, when required
  • Liaise between school, family and community by advocating on student's behalf to the school; advocating on the school's behalf to parents and community; and advocating on the family's behalf re. academic and/or family concerns
  • Collaborate with the Strong Start team to ensure student transitions are smooth and welcoming
  • Support schools in formalizing and enacting a process for school orientation for new students and Strong Start students
  • Arrange transition meetings and school tours for Strong Start students and accompany students on first day, as needed
  • Facilitate group discussions with students on common concerns
  • Build connections with parents to understand their concerns and cultural perspectives
  • Help parents to understand their child's progress and the school system
  • Organize and deliver presentations for parent and community groups (parenting in Canada, schooling in Canada, parental involvement in education, the Canadian school system, intercultural values and beliefs, cultural awareness)
  • Provide referrals to school and community resources
  • Assist with parent-teacher conferences, when required
  • As part of a collaborative district team, support a lens of cultural inclusion in various team meetings and with various groups
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Education or Bachelor of Arts in a relevant field (English, Sociology, International Studies) and/or experience working in schools or with school aged children
  • Proficiency in English
  • A demonstrated understanding of the newcomer experience and/or how to provide culturally and linguistically inclusive environments through a trauma-informed lens.
  • Planning and organizational skills
  • Communication skills (oral and written)
  • Ability to use Microsoft 365 technology, software and applications
  • Presentation skills
  • Experience in community engagement and a proven ability to take initiative

Assetqualifications:

  • International experience in teaching, international relations development, or other cross-cultural work
  • Experience teaching English as an Additional Language
  • Experience as a SWIS worker
    Proficiency in multiple languages

Salary:SBO Pay Band 2, step 19, $2309 bi-weekly, based on a minimum of 36.25 hours/week.
