Purpose of the Position:
The Food Safety, Quality & Regulatory Assurance Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining Cambridge Treats Inc.'s HACCP program, food safety programs, and Quality Management System, along with other related quality initiatives. This role plays a key part in supporting internal audits and ensuring the organization always remains audit ready.
The Food Safety, Quality & Regulatory Assurance Specialist ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, customer expectations, and internal quality standards. This includes reviewing, updating, and maintaining all written programs, SOPs, Work Instructions, and HACCP plans to ensure accuracy and alignment with plant procedures and CFIA regulations.
Essential Position Responsibilities:
- Manage Cambridge Treats Inc.'s Food Safety/HACCP Program, including maintenance, implementation, and verification of food safety and quality programs, ensuring alignment with internal, regulatory, and third-party requirements.
- Maintain food safety and quality program files, ensuring compliance and accessibility for all relevant teams.
- Conduct annual prerequisite and Food Safety/HACCP plan reassessments as scheduled.
- Support approval processes for new ingredients and packaging.
- Ensure adherence to CFIA, HACCP, and Cambridge Treats Quality Management System requirements through ongoing development and verification of program elements (e.g., FSEP manual, corporate guidelines, BRC).
- Manage document control and ensure all revisions on documents and forms are current and accurate.
- Conduct and/or oversee monthly in-house Food Safety/HACCP, GMP and Sanitation audits, ensuring corrective actions are implemented and verified.
- Update Sanitation and Maintenance Program documentation to meet compliance standards.
- Deliver Quality-related training programs, including new hire orientation, annual food hygiene training, Food Safety/HACCP refreshers, and QC Technician training.
- Investigate and resolve non-conformances, update documentation to reflect improvements, and assist in troubleshooting quality issues.
- Assist in supervising QC Technicians, ensuring coverage and compliance with tasks.
- Assist with product development tasks, including creating and updating specifications.
- Support third-party audits, including preparation and coaching of line associates and management teams.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant food safety legislation and proactively communicate regulatory changes to management and cross-functional teams.
- Act as backup to the FSQR Manager when required.
- Analyze microbiological and product data to provide food safety and quality recommendations for continuous improvement.
- Conduct root cause analysis and corrective actions for non-conformities and customer complaints.
- Participate in monthly internal audits with cross-functional teams to identify non-conformities.
- Issue Supplier Non-Conformance reports as needed.
- Promote and maintain a strong culture of Food Safety and Quality throughout the organization.
- Perform other related tasks as required.
Qualifications & Experience
- Post-secondary education in Food Science or a related discipline.
- HACCP Certification (HACCP I & II courses).
- Internal Auditing Certification
- Knowledge and experience with BRC Global Standard for Food Safety and GFSI benchmarked standards.
- PCQI Certification for Animal Food (Preventive Controls Qualified Individual) preferred or required.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in food safety, quality assurance, or HACCP coordination within the food industry.
- Experience working with regulatory agencies (e.g., CFIA, FDA) is an asset.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of GFSI, HACCP, GMPs, SSOPs, and food safety regulations.
- Strong understanding of Canadian and international food safety regulations, with proven ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements in a manufacturing environment.
- Excellent communication and training skills.
- Detail-oriented with strong documentation and organizational abilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and food safety software systems. Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
