This position encompasses a wide variety of skilled labour duties at the Halifax Forum. This position requires teamwork, flexibility, organizational skills, safety awareness and pride in delivering high-quality public service to benefit our citizens. As a result, you will use specialized tools and equipment to contribute to meeting the operational objectives of the Halifax Forum. Reporting to the Operations Manager, this position will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of two ice rinks, ice maintenance, building operation services, cleaning, building maintenance and set up for special events.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure the safe and efficient operations of the facility.
  • Perform designated maintenance and operational inspections of various equipment
  • Record any machinery malfunctions, changes in operation conditions, maintenance performed on equipment or machinery in the daily log book
  • Ice maintenance-which includes installation, ice resurfacing operating and maintaining ice resurfacer
  • Cleaning and maintenance of entire arena including washrooms, dressing rooms, dasher boards etc.
  • Security of equipment in the arena and the building itself
  • General repairs or arena equipment including goal nets
  • Assists with preparing facility for initial ice making, painting ice, maintain, shave and flood the ice, operate and maintain the Zamboni
  • Inspect and maintain boards
  • General labor throughout the facility including daily cleaning
  • Maintenance of exterior grounds including landscaping and snow removal
  • Maintain and adhere to all applicable Government Regulations and Acts relating to the operation of the Halifax Forum Complex
  • Other related assigned duties including those of the utility workers
  • Operation of various machines and tool, including but not limited to, ice resurfacers, edgers, lawn mowers, whippers, skid steer, forklift, hand tools, truck with plow
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with members of the public, teammates, and management;
  • Completion of daily work-related written reports, such as but not limited to: pre & post trip vehicle inspections, commercial vehicle drivers' hours of service logs, job site hazard assessments etc.;

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Three (3) years of related work experience;
  • Must have a valid Nova Scotia Driver's License Class 5

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills;
  • Must have a good attendance and work record;
  • Working knowledge of methods, material and equipment usage involved in Municipal Operations;
  • Capable and willing to work inside and outside in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to work independently, and as a team player
  • Ability to follow instructions, and communicate effectively including oral and written communication;
  • WHMIS, CPR/First Aid certification;

Security Clearance Requirements:

WORK STATUS: One (1) permanent, full-time position.

HOURS OF WORK: Shift 1 of the Halifax Forum Shift Schedule, as described in the CUPE Local 108 Collective Agreement (Monday & Tuesday off; alternating day shift (7:30am-3:30pm) and evening shift (3:30pm-11:30pm) every 2nd weekend).

SALARY: $28.67 per hour as per CUPE 108 Collective Agreement.
