Position Summary

The
Dispatch Planner (Transportation)
plays a critical role in coordinating daily transportation operations by combining real-time dispatch execution with forward-looking planning. This role is responsible for dispatching drivers, optimizing routes, managing capacity, and ensuring service commitments are met efficiently and safely.

The ideal candidate brings
a minimum of two years of hands-on dispatch experience
, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and is comfortable balancing customer expectations, driver needs, and operational constraints in a high-volume transportation operation.

Key Responsibilities

Dispatch & Execution

  • Dispatch company drivers and/or owner-operators for local and regional runs
  • Monitor driver activities throughout the shift to ensure on-time pickups and deliveries
  • Communicate route changes, delays, and service issues in real time
  • Act as the primary point of contact for drivers during the shift
  • Ensure compliance with Hours of Service (HOS), safety, and company policies

Planning & Optimization

  • Plan daily and short-term routes to maximize equipment and driver utilization
  • Balance workload, capacity, and service requirements across multiple accounts
  • Adjust plans proactively based on volume changes, delays, or operational constraints
  • Coordinate equipment availability, yard moves, and trailer planning
  • Support continuous improvement in routing efficiency and cost control

Customer & Internal Coordination

  • Liaise with customers, warehouses, and internal teams to align schedules
  • Resolve service issues professionally and proactively
  • Provide accurate updates to customers and internal stakeholders
  • Maintain clear documentation and dispatch records

Administrative & Systems

  • Utilize Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and dispatch software effectively
  • Track KPIs such as on-time performance, utilization, and service metrics
  • Prepare reports and support operational reviews as required

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in truck dispatching or transportation operations
  • Strong understanding of local and regional trucking operations
  • Working knowledge of Hours of Service (HOS) regulations and transportation compliance
  • Experience using Transportation Management Systems (TMS)
  • Experience with ShipWise and/or A1 dispatch systems is considered a strong asset
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make quick, sound decisions
  • Excellent communication skills with drivers, customers, and internal teams
  • Ability to perform well in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment
  • Experience in a high-volume transportation or logistics operation is an asset
