Position Description

SickKids is inviting candidates to apply for a ~18-month full time contract position of Senior Grants Officer, Grant Applications, Development & Awards now available in the SickKids Research Institute. The Senior Grants Officer will provide administrative oversight, support, and coordination of a high volume of operating grant applications and related business processes. Supporting over 600 basic and clinical Scientists with a combined annual research revenue of $190 million, the successful candidate will represent the Research Institute and become the SickKids subject-matter expert in the policies, procedures, and practices of external granting agencies. Working with leading Scientists and their research teams; Hospital Administrators, Managers, Grant-writers, and Accountants; collaborating Scientists, Universities, and Hospitals around the world, the Senior Grants Officer will have a real impact on the continued growth and success of SickKids's ambitious research program. The successful candidate will be a highly organized, motivated, and productive individual who genuinely cares about scientific research and has the desire and ability to continuously learn new things, apply that knowledge and invent better ways of doing things.

Here's What You'll Get to Do:

  • Oversee and coordinate the administrative and financial aspects of operating grant applications, including reviewing operating grant applications for compliance, completeness, and correctness and reviewing project budgets.
  • Coordinate major competitions, which involves setting timelines and outlining processes that comply with both agency and institutional policies, requirements and guidelines in order to successfully submit all applications by the agency deadline.
  • Provide project management oversight on large, complicated, or multi-site applications with other Universities and Hospitals.
  • Draft institutional correspondence, forms and assurances including briefing and approval memos to Executives as they relate to operating grant applications and grants management.
  • Form solid working relationships with counterparts at granting agencies and collaborating Research Institutes.
  • Serve as a hospital wide subject matter expert in SickKids grant application policies, practices and processes and become a general resource for the SickKids Research Community.
  • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of the overall research funding environment, the competitive grant application process and on the policies and procedures of individual funding agencies both in Canada and abroad (e.g. Canadian Institutes of Health and National Institutes of Health).
  • Learn, invent, and implement new processes, tools, and procedures to help us do the things we do better.
  • Maintain metrics and database for applications and matter tracking using PeopleSoft, SharePoint, and other systems.
  • Other responsibilities as needed.

Essential Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree or successful completion of another formal post-secondary education program is required. Health science, business and/or financial education is preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years experience working in an academic, research, or healthcare environment.
  • Experience with competitive research funding applications, including preparation and submission.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle a high volume of diverse tasks with hard deadlines simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate, negotiate, and problem-solve with a diverse variety of stakeholders who may have conflicting interests and priorities.
  • General resourcefulness and ability to take initiative and quickly find, learn, and assimilate new information.
  • A very high level and demonstrated literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Advanced-user knowledge of all common Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrates commitment and actions in advancing equity, diversity and inclusion objectives.

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience in a healthcare environment or with health science research agencies (e.g. Canadian Institutes of Health and National Institutes of Health)
  • Experience working with PeopleSoft

Employment Type: Full-Time Contract (35 hours/week), Hybrid
