The Dalla Lana School of Public Health is a Faculty of the University of Toronto that originated as one of the Schools of Hygiene begun by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1927. The School, which played a critical role in the COVID-19 pandemic response, went through a dramatic renaissance after the 2003 SARS crisis and it is now the largest public health school in Canada, with more than 850 faculty, 1,000 students, and research and training partnerships with institutions throughout Toronto and the world. With $76 million in research funding per year, including more than $31.5 million held at DLSPH, the School contributes to improving population health and health policy and health systems through discoveries and innovation in data science and AI, maternal, child and reproductive health, climate change [response], implementation and improvement sciences, preventable disease through vaccines and prevention through [and] wellness such as with diabetes, comparative health policy, sustainable and equitable health systems, global and Indigenous health, among many other areas.

Your opportunity:

The Population Health Analytics Lab focuses on research to inform the prevention of chronic diseases and sustainable health systems. Our analytically-driven approach draws from rich demographic, behavioural, social, clinical, and health outcomes data. We inform decision-making related to improving health system performance, reduced inequities, and fiscal sustainability. We work directly with health system stakeholders and decision-makers to translate knowledge to action and enhance the meaningfulness of our studies.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, but taking day to day supervision from the Research Project Manager, the incumbent will conduct qualitative and quantitative research methods. You will conduct complex epidemiological and statistical analyses using various datasets, as well as collect and analyse qualitative data. You will conduct systematic literature reviews and assist in preparing grants, reports, manuscripts and presentations. As a Research Officer, you will monitor and coordinate study activities, work with the lab's partners, as well as facilitate knowledge translation initiatives to share and apply study findings.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing and executing qualitative and quantitative research methods
  • Conducting systematic/literature reviews and evidence synthesis in the context of prediction method and strategies for chronic disease prevention and high resource utilization
  • Conducting statistical data analyses and data interpretation using population-based linked health administrative/survey data
  • Assisting in the preparation of grant submissions and knowledge translation activities, including the preparation of reports, manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
  • Preparing Research Ethics Board protocol submissions related to chronic disease prevention and high resource utilization analyses
  • Delivering presentations at conferences on research findings
  • Tracking and monitoring research activities, maintaining project records and informing stakeholders of project progress
  • Coordinating meeting schedules, agendas, materials and follow-up items

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree with a background in publichealth, epidemiology, health promotion or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
  • Minimum three years of relevant work experience with analysis and interpretation of qualitative and quantitative health-related data
  • Experience in statistical analysis, including binomial, and multinomial logistic regression, discrete-choice models, survival analysis, and count models
  • Experience in analysing complex survey data, including incorporating bootstrap and other survey procedures
  • Experience with qualitative data collection including conducting participant observations and key-informant interviews
  • Experience with qualitative data analysis methods including descriptive, thematic and interpretive techniques
  • Experience with submitting Research Ethics Boards and CIHR grant applications
  • Experience in conducting systematic reviews, critical appraisal of evidence, quality of evidence assessment, meta-analysis, and knowledge syntheses
  • Experience writing reports for public dissemination
  • Experience writing and submitting manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience in working with health decision-makers in applied health settings, such as: public health units, hospitals, regional health authorities or government
  • Demonstrated technical skills conducting epidemiological, statistical and predictive modelling and analysis using SAS, R, STATA
  • Experience and proficiency with mapping software and qualitative software (Nvivo, MaxQDA) to generate maps for various geographic levels
  • Experience with mixed-methods studies
  • Experience and proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, EndNote, REDCap and other software packages and programming languages currently used to collect, analyze and report data
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, time management and problem solving skills with the ability to meet conflicting priorities and balance multiple projects
  • Demonstrated initiative and strong commitment to research work
  • Strong commitment to accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively with and communicate with policy-makers and health decision-makers
  • Ability to learn new skills and learn inputs from multidisciplinary teams

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Knowledge of the social determinants of health and social epidemiology is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of population-based strategies to promote health equity is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of health administrative databases and Vital Statistics databases is highly desirable
