Supervisor Automation & Instrumentation Maintenance

  • Be part of a group that is safety driven and values inclusion
  • Take your maintenance and leadership skills to the next level at a modernized smelter equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
  • This permanent, full-time, role is based in Kitimat, BC. The perfect place to live and work, combining the tranquility of a small community with an unrivaled love for the great outdoors.

About the role

Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs.

We are looking for a Supervisor to lead and develop a team of electricians and instrument technicians within the Automation Maintenance group, while fostering a strong safety culture and building technical capabilities. This role includes supervision of unionized Maintenance Department personnel and accountability for all area resources. The Supervisor's focus is to lead the safe, efficient, and sustainable maintenance of smelter site equipment and facilities.

This role is a great opportunity for a safety-oriented and engaging leader to drive and optimize maintenance program performance in a fast-paced work environment.

Leading on the frontline is one of the most important jobs in our business and comes with a huge amount of responsibility. We need you to motivate, inspire and keep your people safe and well. With signature leadership training programmes, growing, and developing is more than an opportunity – it is something we actively plan and make happen. Every day our leaders grow, while our rosters are designed to help you live the lifestyle that is right for you and your family.

Reporting to the Maintenance Superintendent, and working on a Monday to Friday schedule, with occasional stand-by/on-call weekend shifts, you will be:

  • Working safely in accordance with Rio Tinto safety standards – actively leading, and engaging in safety initiatives promoting our "Zero harm" safety culture
  • Supervising, coordinating, and monitoring the execution of scheduled work plans and unplanned emergency and breakdown work, determining the sequence based on business priority and availability of equipment and workforce
  • Reviewing team member performance and providing appropriate feedback and coaching
  • Maintaining a continuous improvement focus by recommending improvements to maintenance practices and productivity
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to resolve issues
  • Preparing and entering data into various information systems (i.e. work order history, employee pay details, monthly reports, discipline, etc.)
  • Developing and promoting a positive employee relations environment within the department
  • Leading with a genuine care for people

What you'll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Red Seal trade, Engineering or Engineering Technology qualification in a related field such as Electrical, Instrumentation, Automation, Power Systems, etc.
  • Knowledge of Rockwell products and programming (i.e., Control Logic)
  • At least 5 years of relevant technical and supervisory experience in a heavy industrial setting: mining, processing, manufacturing or related, with experience in a unionized environment
  • Demonstrated passion for building relationships, coaching, and engagement through excellent communication and teamwork
  • A minimum of a Class 7 (Novice) provincial driver's license
  • Effective leadership skills: the ability to set direction, prioritize and achieve objectives, actively listen, and engage and motivate your team members
  • Clear, concise, and tactful communication
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)

Please note: Fly-in-fly-out arrangements are not available, but we do offer domestic relocation assistance to help you settle in and thrive. Join our team and become an integral part of our vibrant community.

Applications close on Sunday the 16th of November 2025 (Rio Tinto reserves the right to remove advertised roles prior to this date).
