Communications Supervisor

The National Police Federation is currently hiring two Communications Supervisors to join our team.
Overview of the Role: The Communications Supervisor leads the tactical execution of the NPF's communications strategy while ensuring operational excellence across national and regional communications, subject to approval from the Communications Manager and Director. The Communications Supervisor provides support to the Communications Manager by overseeing and coordinating day-to-day operations of Communications Coordinators and Advisors by overseeing their tasking/workloads, providing initial reviews and approvals for materials, and managing their performance. The Supervisor is also responsible for ongoing campaign delivery, content strategy and development, oversight of social and digital assets, and advising internal teams on effective communication practices.

Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Supervision
- Oversee, supervise, and manage Communications Coordinators and Communications Advisors, which includes but is not limited to performance and compensation reviews and planning, task assignment, workload management, professional development, leave and expense requests and performance and compensation management and assessments.
- Support onboarding and training for new team members in conjunction with Communications Manager.
- Under guidance of the Communications Manager, allocate tasks and manage workloads across the communications team to ensure timely and high-quality deliverables.
- Facilitate regular team check-ins, workflow planning, and project alignment meetings.
- Provide initial reviews and approvals for work completed by direct reports to ensure brand alignment, accuracy, and consistency in tone and messaging.
- Oversee the rotational coverage schedule for social media monitoring, campaign posting, and emergency communications.
Communications Oversight and Delivery
- Lead development and delivery of national and regional campaigns and other projects as assigned with support from Director and Manager.
- Draft, review, and approve communications content including Member Updates, social media, blog posts, internal and external emails, and website materials.
- Provide communications guidance to other departments; ensure tools and templates are used consistently across teams.
- Manage the Member Update approval process, translation flow, and creative asset development lifecycle.
- Act as final reviewer of national and regional campaign social media calendars, national KPI reporting, and MailChimp campaign results prepared by the team.
- Maintain oversight of internal approvals and coordinate with external vendors, legal counsel, and RCMP as needed.
- Participate in and chair internal team meetings and provide on-call support as part of a rotation.
Project and Campaign Management
- Serve as project lead for multi-platform communications initiatives (e.g. National Police Week, Mental Health campaigns, regional advocacy campaigns, major video projects).
- Ensure timelines, budgets, and approvals are tracked and met across video production, digital advertising, and large-scale outreach campaigns.
- Oversee development of annual and quarterly communications plans, including monitoring key performance indicators and campaign effectiveness.
- Guide solutions for issues identified by NPF leadership or Communications team and escalate strategic matters to the Manager and Director as needed.
Strategic Planning and Support
- Collaborate with the Manager to implement the overarching Communications Strategy.
- Propose content, tools, and process improvements to support evolving organizational goals.
- Track and assess campaign analytics to inform data-driven recommendations and improvements.
- Support Manager with issues management, briefings, and cross-departmental planning.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or Journalism or related field.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in communications roles, with 1–2 years in a supervisory or project lead capacity.
- Experience in a unionized or advocacy-focused environment (asset).
- Ability to speak and read/write French a benefit.
Knowledge
- Strong understanding of social media platforms, trends, algorithms, and best practices.
- Broad knowledge of internal communications, media relations, and campaign execution.
- Familiarity with political, union, and policing environments in Canada.
- Knowledge of accessibility, translation practices, and inclusive communications.
- High degree of comfort with confidentiality principles.
Skills
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills across platforms.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, MailChimp, WordPress, Teams, and SharePoint.
- Strong planning and organizational skills; ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
- Comfort analyzing performance data and making content recommendations based on results.
- Good interpersonal skills – ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

Other Requirements
- Travel required at least 4-6/year
- Participation in on-call rotation for social media monitoring and crisis communications may be required.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment enhanced criminal record check.
Compensation & Other Important Information:
The starting base salary, depending on qualifications/experience, for this position is between $86, $100,778.29 range. The maximum salary for the role is $129, The ability to advance through the salary range will be based on our internal REACH Program.
Starting annual leave for this position is 3 weeks (accrued as earned) which increases to 4 weeks after five years of employment with the NPF.
While some travel is required for this role, our remote work model includes flexibility in completing work hours and a philosophy in promoting a positive work-life balance.
