Start Your Environmental Career Where Science Meets Real‑World Impact
Join a global environmental leader and help protect wildlife while advancing renewable energy. This is an outstanding opportunity for an early‑career environmental professional to gain hands‑on field experience, contribute to meaningful environmental outcomes, and play a direct role in supporting ERM's global strategy. As an Environmental Field Technician (Field Based), you'll be on the front lines of post‑construction monitoring programs—collecting critical data that helps ensure responsible wind energy development.
ERM is hiring for a project-based, part-time (minimum 30 hours per week), limited-term role based in Medicine Hat, AB, Canada, with a duration of 8 months and potential extension. Full training will be provided for all client‑specific and site‑specific safety, security, sampling, and inspection procedures, making this an ideal role for professionals looking to build or strengthen their field-based environmental career.
Why This Role Matters?
Post‑construction monitoring plays a vital role in balancing renewable energy development with environmental stewardship. In this role, your fieldwork directly supports wildlife protection measures and regulatory commitments tied to wind energy projects. Your contributions help ERM and its clients make data‑driven decisions that advance sustainable development at a global scale.
What Your Impact Is:
- Collecting accurate and defensible field data to support post‑construction monitoring programs for wind energy projects
- Supporting bird and bat mortality monitoring, and wildlife surveys that inform environmental mitigation strategies
- Upholding ERM's strong safety culture while working independently in outdoor field conditions
- Contributing to high‑quality data management and reporting that informs client and regulatory stakeholders
What You'll Bring:
Required
- 0–3 years of field experience
- Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or a related field
- Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a rental truck due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area
- Ability to walk long distances and carry heavy field equipment in outdoor environments
- Strong observational and organizational skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills to collaborate with ERM and client staff
- Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel, for communication and preparation of inspection documentation
- This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship
Preferred
- Experience recording detailed technical data in a field environment
- Familiarity with environmental field surveys or monitoring programs
- Physical capability for long field days traveling on foot in uneven terrain
Key Responsibilities:
- Complete post‑construction bird and bat mortality monitoring and wildlife surveys
- Collect, organize, and manage field data and related information
- Drive to field sites and work independently on‑site
- Promote safety awareness and the safe performance of work at all times
- Contribute to a positive, professional, and collaborative field culture
Work Schedule & Field Expectations:
- Three to five days per week in the field, generally during daytime hours
- Daily hours and shift duration vary by site and workload, up to 12‑hour days
- Travel and on‑site work comprise the majority of time
- Accommodations coordinated near Medicine Hat for overnight field shifts
- Workdays scheduled monthly in advance to maintain survey consistency
- Potential for occasional weekend and holiday field shifts
This role is ideal for someone eager to grow their technical skills, deepen their field experience, and make a tangible impact in environmental consulting—while working alongside a globally respected team committed to sustainability and safety.
